Creston Community School District’s website has a new look. Tuesday marked the first day the school district’s website update was online, with sleek crimson and black bars, and bubbles with panthers inside to mark informational boxes. “What we hope to do is provide the information we have in the past, plus a

Mother Nature gave Union County and the city of Creston an early test run for the winter months ahead, dumping one to three inches of snow Nov. 15. While it was earlier than both Union County Engineer Steve Akes and Creston’s Public Works Director Kevin Kruse wanted to see the white

road maintenance, it is a gamble trying to guess how challenging the winter weather could be. “I usually budget for an average winter, but it is a wild guess,” Akes said. “We always know in the back of our minds if we have a bad winter, we will just have to amend the budget.” Kruse said they prepare for the winter by making sure all the equipment is working properly and stocking up on salt and sand. The city uses three plow trucks to clear city streets and a snow blower with three haul trucks to remove any snow from Creston’s uptown. “One of the best things people can do to help is follow the winter parking ordinance,”

Kruse said. “That helps us about as much as anything else.” Akes said the county typically runs seven or eight plows that are divided up to work on specific sections of Union County. Covering such a large area can cause challenges. Akes said some storms dump more snow on a certain part of the county or with wind may cause some areas to drift worse. “The guys have to be flexible in the winter,” Akes said. “They are good about working together, asking if their neighbor needs any help.”

The PTO Carnival at Creston Elementary School is scheduled Friday. The carnival will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features games, food, prizes, raffle and auction. A meal will also be provided for $5, which includes a walking taco, cookie and drink. Snacks at the carnival include popcorn and slushies. The PTO carnival is a fundraiser with proceeds going to fund teaching supplies, technology, books and more. A literacy night was also planned Friday, but has now been moved to Jan. 22 at Creston Elementary. More details on the literacy night will be available later.

School officials apologize GREENFIELD (AP) — School officials have issued an apology to victims of a 2011 hazing incident at Nodaway Valley High School. The apology came as part of a settlement Tuesday from the incident in the high school’s wrestling room. Two students — Mikel Feick and Jacob Schliessman — were originally charged with second-degree sexual abuse, but the charges were reduced to first-degree harassment. According to online court documents, the students pleaded guilty to the harassment charges.

Pie in the face: Barb Brown gets a pie in the face from student Charley Buddenhagen

during a halftime event in conjunction with SWCC Week at Tuesday night’s men’s basketball game against Wartburg College JV. Free “Spartan Nation” T-shirts were distributed and spectators could get free admission by bringing a food canned good. At halftime, a “chosen instructor” was supposed to get a pie in the face, but organizers decided to give a close-up taste to each candidate — Brown, Mac Miller, Kelly Franklin, Larry Shimono, Jill Pastorino and Keith Olsen.
