The Republican party saw widespread success in Iowa during last week’s general election. Union County’s two open seats on the county board of supervisors both went to Republican incumbents Dennis Brown and Lois Monday. Meanwhile, Union County heavily favored Republican candidates in the Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) carried Union County with 67.7 percent of the vote, while U.S. Rep. David Young (R-Iowa) carried Union County with 63.3 percent of the vote. Joe Owens, the chair of the Union County Republican Central Committee, said he was relieved at the result

of the election. The Republican party flipped six seats in the state Senate by defeating Democratic incumbents – one of which was Mike Gronstal, who had served as state Senator since 1985. Owens said Gronstal was one of the “greatest deterrents to business and growth in our state.” “There were some areas of the state that had been historically Democrat and they turned around and elect- Owens ed Republican representatives,” Owens said. “I thought it was great.” ELECTION | 2A

Brightest moon in almost 69 years lights up sky around globe BEIJING (AP) — The brightest moon in almost 69 years is lighting up the sky in a treat for star watchers around the globe. The phenomenon known as the supermoon reached its peak luminescence in North America before dawn on Monday. Its zenith in Asia and the South Pacific was Monday night. Across the international

dateline in New Zealand, it was to reach its brightest after midnight Tuesday local time. The moon orbits the Earth in an oval shape. The moon will be at its brightest this week because it is coming closer to the Earth along its elliptical orbit than at any time since January 1948. The supermoon MOON | 2A
