The house at 501 S. Elm St. in Creston — currently being constructed by Union County Development Association (UCDA) and Southwestern Community College (SWCC) — is about 30 percent complete. College carpentry students enjoyed warm temperatures Monday while working to install soffit and fascia at the house, but cold temperatures starting Tuesday forced them to shift gears. “Monday was probably our last day working on the exterior. The rest will have to wait until spring unless we get some kind of warm spell,” said Dennis Downing, car-

room and begin calculating steps and building a small set,” Downing said. “Stairs will be one of our first projects once we begin work inside.” Downing and associate carpentry instructor Kyle Harvey have 14 first-year and

nine second-year students in the class this year. Downing said this house has two bedrooms and one bathroom on the 940-squarefoot main floor. The unfinished basement will have a large laundry room and an egress window, which will allow the buyer to add a third bedroom in the future, if desired. “A second bathroom will also be able to be added in the basement pretty easy,” Downing said. This house will not have a garage. Downing said one difference with this house — compared to others built by SWCC on Elm Street — is that it will have more of a mission style interior design compared to the colonial style in others. A price for this house will not be listed until construction is complete. However, if you are interested, call Wayne Pantini at (641) 7822003. This is the third house
ATLANTIC (AP) — Prosecutors say a western Iowa mother accused of lying about her young daughter’s cancer diagnosis has accepted a plea deal. Cass County Attorney Daniel Feistner said late Thursday that 30-year-old Leatha Slauson took the deal but the details of it won’t be released until Monday. It’s unclear how Slauson will plead or what penalties she could face. Slauson is accused of telling her community that her 5-year-old daughter had terminal cancer and collecting donations for her treatment. An investigation this year determined the child was not sick. Slauson previously pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including child endangerment. The child and her siblings have remained in the custody of their father since Slauson’s arrest in Aug. 21.
