BIN-BUSTER HARVEST By JAKE WADDINGHAM CNA associate editor

T

he finish line for the 2014 harvest is in sight for Doug Wallace and other area farmers, but questions still remain about how long farmers will be holding out for favorable market conditions. Wallace finished harvesting beans a couple of weeks ago and as of this morning, only has 20 acres of corn left. “There is definitely a push with guys running as long and hard as they can,” Wallace said. “With temperatures below normal for this time of year and snow to the north, guys are just a little bit nervous.” While the current conditions do not negatively impact the harvest, the colder weather does slow everything down as machinery takes more time to warm up and work properly. “Mother nature has been kind to us the month of October and early November,” said Aaron Saeugling, Iowa State University extension field agronomist for 14 counties in southwest Iowa. “Farmers are hard at work combining corn now that the ground has dried out.” The United States Department of Agriculture reported 82 percent of Iowa’s corn and 96

percent of the soybean crop has been harvested. Both are a day or two behind the 2013 harvest, but maintaining a normal pace. Saeugling said southwest Iowa farmers are reporting above average yields for corn and soybeans. He added there has not been much movement in the way of fall fertilizer, so that may be Saeugling a concern for next spring to get all the fertilizer applied. “Corn is drying down in the field with the average moisture coming in around 16 percent,” said Gavilon Manager Dean Michaelson. “A month ago we were worried it would be real- Michaelson ly wet, but the test weight is coming up and we are seeing a better quality crop that will store

better.” Farmers took advantage of a full week of suitable days for fieldwork, advancing harvest numbers by 21 percent. This is the most harvested during the second week in November since 1993. The colder temperatures are helping farmers combine some areas in fields where the soil was still soggy. Mark O’Riley, who does a majority of his farming in Union County, finished with his beans and is working on harvesting his corn. He said most of his fields are averaging about 30 percent higher yields. “Everybody has been in pretty good humor except when they have to sit in town (to unload) and wait,” O’Riley said.

Southwestern Community College Board of Directors met for a regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday at the college, and were presented with a slide show of college student demographics by SWCC Dean of Students Beth Kulow. New data Kulow included in the presentation, alongside the traditional demographics that include average age and gender percentages, came from a student survey done at the end of the 2013-14 school year. “It is important to understand the demographics of our students that move above and beyond specific application or student record information,” Kulow said. “Once we grasp the understanding of our demographics, we are empowered Kulow to truly serve the student.” Both student enrollment and amount of credit hours taken have increased for the fall 2014 semester.

Information gathered from the student survey started with the basics. The data is based on 903 students, which is more than half of students currently attending the college The majority of students are full-time attending SWCC’s Creston campus. The next most common student is one still in high school, followed by part-time students. Looking at finances and work, 67.4 percent of all students surveyed are employed while at SWCC. Of that percentage, most work between 11 and 20 hours per week, while the smallest group of students works over 40 hours. “The results of the survey were not necessarily surprising to me,” Kulow said. “The number of our students that are working directly reflects the information
