ORNING — Straightline winds and at least two possible tornadoes wreaked havoc in southwest Iowa around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Don Willett, emergency management coordinator in Adams County, said this morning that three buildings at Corning’s industrial park, all owned by Precision Pulley Inc., were seriously damaged. “It’s not confirmed yet if the damage was caused by a tornado or straightline winds,” Willett said. “Employees there say they saw the rotation. Either way, there was damage to the roof and siding, windows were blown out and there was damage to small trees.” Willett said one of the trees fell on tanks of argon gas and oxygen and caused a leak outside the building.

Willett said about 40 people were briefly evacuated because of this leak. No one was injured. Meanwhile, straightline winds exceeding 60 mph blew a 25,000-pound semi trailer off the roadway eight miles east of Corning

on Highway 34. The driver, Don Bailey of Bondurant, was not injured. Bailey, who works for Old Dominion Freight Line, had just made a delivery at CHS Inc. in Creston and was traveling west on

Highway 34 to make a stop at Southwest Valley High School to unload a bench. “I was doing the speed limit until I started coming down the hill,” Bailey said. “It was dark and I could STORM | 5A

It doesn’t take 9-yearold Reece Kinsella long to think of what she enjoys most about Creston’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) carnival. “My favorite part is the cake walk. I do it like 20 times a year,” she said. “One time, I even saw scotcheroos. I did it like 30 times Kinsella that year.” For fellow fourth-grader Christian Ahrens, activities at the top of the list include the football toss and inflatable obstacle course. “I like how you can race your friends in that big slide thing,” Ahrens said. “I raced (a friend) last year. We tied.” But for Kinsella and Ahrens’ fourth-grade teacher, Robbie Tanner, there’s another favorite part to the carnival. It’s the knowledge that, following the PTO’s yearly fundraiser, she and her fellow elementary teachers will receive thousands of dollars to purchase classroom materials like books, color printers and other items they wouldn’t otherwise have funding for. “To me, it’s always like a little Christmas gift,” Tanner said. “It’s something that we look forward to in trying to figure out how we’re going to spend our money and what would be

best for the kids.” This year’s PTO carnival will be Nov. 20 at Creston Elementary/Middle School. Dinner will begin at 5 p.m., with games open from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. E r i n Kiley, Creston PTO treasurer and marketing chairwoman for the Kiley carnival, said the past two carnivals have raised more than $20,000 apiece. Each year, that money is divided among the grade levels for teachers to use as they wish. The PTO also holds a portion back for special events. Over the summer, Tanner used some of these PTO funds to purchase paint and stencils that were used to paint a giant map of the Tanner United States on the elementary playground. She said elementary teachers have also used PTO funds to cover a visit from an Iowa State University entemologist and the annual 5th grade Colonial Days, as well as the purchases of iPads, Apple TVs and other technology for classroom use. “It’s something we all would love to have but we would not purchase that CARNIVAL | 2A
