ABOVE, Iowa Army National Guard member Caleb McLain, a 2008 Creston High School graduate, speaks about his experience so far in the military to a crowd of CHS students and faculty, veterans and others during the CHS Veterans Day program this morning in the school gymnasium. McLain spoke of being involved with “the wrong crowd,” which later led to him attending Alcoholics Anonymous and going through other treatment plans. He joined the military in 2006 with parental consent and has since deployed and worked in recruitment. Archived video of the CHS Veterans Day program can be found at http://citylinktv.com/channel/creston-ksib-radio/. BELOW, U.S. Army veterans Bob Arnold, left, of Shannon City and Duane Wallace, right, of Orient have coffee and breakfast this morning at Creston Hy-Vee’s Veterans Day breakfast. Arnold served from 1957 to 1959, and Wallace served from 1963 to 1965. See page 5A for a Veterans Day story on two World War II veterans.

Brian Jack of Creston fills one of two vacancies the board has been trying to fill since Jeromy Brown and Joshua Borgmann resigned in early October. The mayor appointed Jack over the phone last week. “It was hard to imagine a better candidate, and we

are grateful he agreed to join us,” Library Director David Hargrove said. For Jack, the library is a community’s tool for retrospection. “I think of a library as a time machine as it allows you to go back in time, so to speak, to look at history, to see what the outcomes of that history have been, and it offers an opportunity to consider what different futures there may be,” Jack said. This encouraged him to LIBRARY | 2A
