ONE MORE MONTH CNA file photo

If you’re traveling down Highway 34, be prepared to stop at the Skyline Bridge just east of Creston. Traffic is one-way across the bridge as the Iowa Department of Transportation performs deck joint repairs and puts down erosion stone.

Single-lane traffic across the Skyline Bridge east of Creston will likely continue through the end of November, as a Department of Transportation (DOT) bridge maintenance project is taking about a month longer than expected. “It’s been a long project here — longer than we anticipated,” said Scott Nixon, resident construction engineer at Creston’s DOT office. “The contractor assures me that he’s looking at three (more) weeks, but I’m going to say four.”

A construction crew has been making repairs to the bridge’s deck joints, where Nixon said four decades of rust have created holes in the steel, leading to increased leakage down to the bridge’s abutment. Nix-

on said the crew has been replacing these steel joints with new, watertight ones and is also fixing the erosion caused by the leakage. Nixon said the new joints will be the long-term solution for the bridge, which was constructed in the early 1970s. “We had the contractor test the watertightness of it to make sure it does not leak,” Nixon said. “We’ve had really good luck with these type of joints, keeping that water out from the abutment.” Nixon said construction on the north lane of the bridge reached completion Thursday and the crew is

now beginning work on the south lane, which was closed briefly at the outset of the project for some preliminary shoulder strengthening. Construction began Sept. 8, and Nixon said traffic should return to normal by Dec. 1.

Accidents spike According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, there have been four reported accidents at or near the construction site in the past two months, all involving the rear-ending of a vehicle. Chief Deputy Steve Maitlen said the Skyline Bridge

Warm weather keeping Veterans program harvest ahead of schedule to be streamed live DES MOINES (AP) — Agriculture officials say an unusually warm start to November has helped Iowa corn and soybean farmers nearly complete this year’s harvest. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says statewide temperatures were about nine degrees above normal last week,

making it the warmest start to November since 2008. That allowed farmers to get 93 percent of the corn crop out of the fields, nine days ahead of last year’s harvest and two days ahead of the five-year average. Agriculture officials say they’ve received reports of

piles of corn on the ground at some ethanol plants and local elevators. Soybean farmers have 98 percent of the crop harvested, a week ahead of last year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture updates its estimate of the size of this year’s harvest later today.
