For the first time, Union County Development Association (UCDA) has received the Housing Iowa Innovation Award from Iowa Finance Authority. UCDA was selected for Creston’s Elm Street Corridor project due to the collaboration of local organizations it involved. The purpose of this housing project is to replace dilapidated homes with new homes that are affordable for low- to moderate-income individuals. The project is also a means of increasing the tax base, developing skills in students in construction trades and enhancing the image of Creston. on the lap of the driver and ended up on the ground. It is unknown if the child fell or jumped off. Life-saving measures were taken before Calab Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. Afton first responders, Union County sheriff’s deputies and Greater Regional Medical Center emergency medical personnel responded to the incident. An air ambulance was called to the scene but was not needed.

breakfast. “We were excited to get some recognition for the work we’ve done there the last several years,” Pantini said. “A lot of partners have come together to work on it.” The project has included homes built, in part, by Southwestern Community College carpentry students. The four single-family UCDA homes were built by SWCC students, and then private developer Don Sonntag of Sonntag Development LLC has built two duplex units in that area. This year, SWCC carpentry students are working with Sonntag to build

one of the units on South Maple Street. “Each entity involved – UCDA, Southern Iowa Council of Governments, Southwestern Community College, the city of Creston – all had a different piece of the puzzle that they could fulfill in trying to improve the housing in the area, the image and provide affordable housing,” Pantini said. “The progress that we had there eventually led to working with Sonntag to come in and build the duplex units.” SICOG helped with funding of the Elm Street project through its Housing Trust Fund.

“We provided funds to demo some of the properties and then to get the lots prepared for new construction,” said Judy Brimm, SICOG finance director. “It was very exciting to know that that many entities can come together and partner on a successful project and then that it was recognized by the state.” On the construction end of the Elm Street project, SWCC students have been taught and overseen by Dennis Downing, SWCC carpentry and building trades instructor. “There were a lot of people involved in the project,” Downing said. “It’s AWARD | 2A
