Fire Prevention Week begins Sunday and with it are a slew of opportunities for children to get involved with helping their families prevent residence fires.
With the help of this year’s slogan, “Don’t wait — check the date,” firefighters across the country, as well as those in the Creston area, are being proactive in educating the public on how to prevent fires. “Studies show you don’t wake up to smoke, so it’s important we have working
smoke detectors throughout our homes and make sure they’re operational,” said Todd Jackson, Creston fire chief. “As we’re s e e i n g Jackson
fires grow more rapidly than they used to, we have a very small window to escape those fires. So, we need early detection of a fire in our house so we can get out safely.” Fire Prevention Week was introduced by President FIRE | 2A
Harvest progresses, Nebraska farmers slightly ahead of Iowa DES MOINES (AP) — Harvest is underway with 21 percent of soybeans and 10 percent of the corn crop already completed in Iowa. That’s a day behind last year’s progress at this time. Rain likely has something
to do with it. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s weekly crop status report released Monday indicates weather was favorable for farmers but there were reports of muddy conditions and standing
water in some fields from earlier storms. Iowa Corn and soybeans are rated at 81 percent good to excellent. It was nearly ideal for harvest in Nebraska where farmers reported 15 per-
cent of corn harvested, behind the five-year average and 27 percent of soybeans in bins, right at average. The USDA reports 73 percent of Nebraska corn and 78 percent of soybeans are rated good to excellent.
Four walks are planned in Creston for this year’s Healthiest State Initiative. The initiative is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization with the goal of making Iowa the healthiest state in the nation by encouraging physical, social and emotional well-being of Iowans. The walks take place tomorrow at these locations: Southern Prairie YMCA, Southwestern Community College, uptown Creston and Hy-Vee. Maps of the walks are available on the Healthiest State Initiative website, www.iowahealthieststate.com. Each walk takes about 30 minutes. “The walk is important because it shows people can lead healthier lives one step at a time,” said Raquel Linch, Y M C A o f f i c e manager. “Walking is something easy to do and (most) everyone can Linch do it. If you’re new to exercise, walking is a great start, so the Healthiest State walk is a good starting point. For others who do exercise,
it’s a reminder to get out there and keep going.”
YMCA The first walk is 10 a.m. tomorrow at the YMCA, 1201 W. Townline St. in Creston. Those participating can meet in the YMCA lobby. The path begins at the Y and goes north on the walking trail toward Green Valley State Park and then returns to the Y. Those walking do not need to sign up beforehand. “We also offer a power-walking class at the Y that’s Tuesday-Thursday, so if you want to come join us to continue walking for social exercise, it’s from 10 to 10:45 a.m.,” Linch said.
SWCC The next walk is scheduled 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at SWCC, 1501 W. Townline St. in Creston. Meet in front of the administration center on the north end of campus. The path goes from the administration center toward the walking trail leading to Green Valley State Park and back to the center. Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite SWCC attire and comfortable walking shoes. Those walking do not need to sign up. “I think it’s a great initiative overall,” said Cait Maitlen, SWCC director of admissions. “It’s awesome that the state pushes this to try to get people to be the healthiest Maitlen version of WALK | 2A
