The main reason Sergio Antelmi came to the U.S. from Sydney, Australia, was to play college-level basketball. “It’s an up-and-coming thing in Australia where they’re trying to bring kids to the U.S. because there are more opportunities here,” said Antelmi, 20. “Back home, there’s no level of basketball after high school. It’s pretty much just going professional, and that’s really hard to do.” Last year, Antelmi had his first experience studying abroad at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota. There, he played Division II basketball and studied physical education. Now, he’s in his first year at Southwestern Community College (SWCC). “I got injured last year; I broke my collar bone. So I was out for a while,” Antelmi said. “My coach there knew the coach here (at SWCC), so they were talking, and I decided to come here and start fresh.” At SWCC, Antelmi plays forward center on the basketball team and is taking physical education classes. “He’s 6’7”, a strong guy, so he definitely provides some stability,” said Todd Lorensen, head men’s basketball coach at SWCC. “He shoots better than the traditional big man ... and he’s good enough to kind of adjust as needed.” Antelmi has been studying, in part, through basketball scholarships and plans to stay at SWCC for two years. After that, he hopes to study for two more years at another college in the U.S. before going back

to Australia. He’s unsure which college he’d like to attend next. “Financially, it’s hard for me, so I’ll go wherever will give me a scholarship,” Antelmi said. Though he doesn’t have concrete plans for his future yet, Antelmi said he is interested in teaching physical education and coaching. While attending Black Hills State, he got his first insight into coaching. He helped coach first graders, and he said it was fun but challenging because

LORIMOR — The cause of a rural Iowa structure fire last week remains unknown. According to Dave McMillen, Lorimor fire chief, Lorimor firefighters responded to a house fire south of Lorimor at about 10 p.m. Thursday. The house, owned by Bob Brown of Thayer, was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived, and the roof had collapsed.

harvested,” Northey said. “Corn and bean harvest are both ahead of last year and the five-year average. The warm, windy weather early in the week allowed crops to dry quickly before much of the state got some moisture on Friday that slowed things down.” Harvest activities continued rapidly early in the week but slowed down last Friday due to rain, according to the USDA. Statewide there were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Oct. 25, down 1.5 days from the previous week. Iowa

A cause remains unknown because of the extent of the damage to the structure, which was vacant at the time of the fire. “It was kind of an unknown cause ... because the house was too far gone by the time we got there,” McMillen said. “The only thing we can determine out of that was when we got it put out, the fire started on the west side of the house at the basement access.” Later, the fire rekindled because of the wind, and a Please see FIRE, Page 2
