A pair of Creston Community School District buses sit in front of Creston Community Elementary/Middle School Wednesday morning after students departed buses for the start of the school day. CCSD recently purchased new camera systems for the district’s bus fleet, and the installation process for those camera systems is expected to be completed by Nov. 5.

New cameras have been ordered and the installation process has begun as Creston Community School District works to upgrade the camera systems on its buses. With the new camera system, each bus will have multiple cameras. According to CCSD Transportation Director Bob Beatty, the larger buses in the fleet will have seven or eight cameras on board. When the installation process is complete, 13 of the district’s 23 buses will be equipped with the new camera system. The remaining 10 buses are spare buses, and Beatty said they
are rarely used. CCSD Business Manager Billie Jo Greene said the district’s goal is to have the installation process complete by Nov. 5. The new cameras are equipped with infrared, GPS and audio. Each bus will have five or six cameras inside and two cameras on the outside used to monitor the bus’ stop arm. Previously, the district’s buses had three cameras on board. “In the past, we couldn’t put midship cameras in because of the protrusion down into the cabin area,” Be- Beatty
atty said. “Now we recess them into the ceiling.” Currently, eight buses are outfitted with the new camera system, as some of the new cameras have already been installed. Another feature of the new system is bus drivers have the ability to mark an event on the video log from the cameras, giving the district an easy way to go find incidents on the tape. “It helps us find the incident on the video quicker instead of going through and watching the whole video to find out what happened when,” Beatty said. “It puts a little red mark in the video where it happened.” Beatty said bus drivers are sometimes accused of not being at a certain place

at a certain time, but with the GPS capabilities of the new camera system, the district will easily be able to prove the bus’ location. It can also track the speed of the vehicle. The cost of the camera systems, including installation, is $5,000 per bus.
The eighth annual Holiday to Holiday Extravaganza is scheduled for Saturday and features a new look this year. The event is now located in the big tent in the Hy-Vee parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission to the event is free for children and adults. Holiday to Holiday is meant to bring businesses to one place to “kick off the holiday season,” said CNA Advertising Director Craig Mittag. Hy-Vee is prepared to host the event with wine and spirits sampling for adults and plenty of space for vendors. Mittag is expecting a large crowd at this year’s event
sion, more than 25 vendors and change in venue. “Moving it to a venue, like a grocery store on a Saturday, yeah, I think we’ll Mittag have a lot more people,” said Mittag. Creston Hy-Vee store director and wine specialist Jeremy Odem is expecting this year’s Holiday to Holiday crowd to exceed 300 people. Odem said he believes moving the event to Hy-Vee provides a better opportunity to showcase holiday food and drinks than in previous HOLIDAY | 2A
Stop arm violations The cameras monitoring the bus’ stop arm work in tandem. One camera is designed to focus in on license plates of cars passing by, while the other camera is set up to view the stop arm and the vehicle coming through. Beatty said stop arm violations have been a big problem in certain areas BUS | 2A

We are enjoying being on “one” level and having no unused space to clean. We also like the quietness of the more rural setting. Having supermarkets, schools, churches, the hospital and clinics so accessible is also a plus! We are so pleased to finally have this type of housing available in Creston. -Don and Helen Mosman Condominium TesTimonial • R RealTy • 114 n elm • 641-782-9408 • 641-745-0372
