Last week, Creston, Afton, Mount Ayr and Osceola each received word of being awarded grants for projects seeking to improve health and wellness. Grant recipients in the Creston News Advertiser’s coverage area are: $10,000 to Taylor Park playground in Creston, $5,000 to resurfacing Afton’s community basketball court, $10,000 to Dragoon Trace Nature Center in Mount Ayr and $10,000 to the Clarke Community Bike Share project in Osceola. The Wellmark Foundation, a nonprofit organization, awarded 30 Community Kickstarter grants totaling $277,654 for initiatives intended to make Iowa communities healthier. The projects chosen, out of 79 submissions, were awarded for their emphasis on providing long-term opportunities to make community members more active and healthy. “All of these communities and organizations are committed to improving the health and well-being of their citizens,” said Stephanie Perry, The Wellmark
Foundation manager, in a press release. “These grants fund projects that will have a community-wide impact now and for future generations.”
Creston The Creston Park and Recreation Board applied for a $10,000 grant for improvements to Taylor Park. “When this grant came along, our project fit the criteria,” said Creston Park and Rec Board Member Gary Borcherding. “It was accepted through phase one of the program, and then phase two was local people going on Facebook and voting to support the projBorcherding ect. We would like to thank the community for their support because without people going to Facebook and voting, we couldn’t have gotten it.” Taylor Park has a wooden playground structure, and part of it had to be removed because it was “dilapidated to the point it couldn’t be fixed anymore,” Borcherding said. “We had a group in town ... that came up with some
