Traffic disruptions expected on Adams Street this weekend

box tops for education challenge

The city of Creston has been notified by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad that Saturday and Sunday a contractor working for BNSF will be removing the wooden poles along Adams Street in the uptown area. Residents are advised there will be traffic disruptions during this time, and there should be no parking

within 50 feet of this pole line in any of the city lots on the west and east sides of the restored Depot or in the parking lot on the southwest corner of Adams and Elm streets. Parking on the south side of Adams Street in the 100 and 200 blocks of East Adams Street should also be avoided.

digging through a pie to find a gumball without using their hands. The two principals completed this challenge Thursday morning in the Creston Elementary/Middle School commons in front of elementary students to reward them for collecting $709 in Box Tops for Education during the fall. After about two minutes of furious chewing, Driskell emerged the winner. The classroom to collect the most Box Tops this fall was Tara Waigand’s first-grade class, which collected 800, or $80. Also pictured are first-grader Tayler Moffitt, left, who raised the most Box Tops in Waigand’s class, and Creston PTO secretary Erin Kiley, who coordinated the contest. The school will have another Box Tops contest in the spring. For video of the challenge, visit www.crestonnews.com.

As 2015 draws to a close, questions are arising about how and when to renew a nonprofessional permit to carry weapons. This coming January will mark five years since Iowa administrators changed the permit to carry law, which allows those with permits to wait five years instead of one. “This year is confusing because they (those with permits) aren’t sure if they need to get new training, or if they don’t need new training,” said Tracy Chapman, Union County Sheriff’s Office civil clerk. “It

just depends on when they come in, how long is left on their permit.” A person with a permit already has two choices: renew or get a new one in the county he or she resides. This choice is dependent on the expiration date of the permit. For a new permit, the current permit must be expired, have less than 30 days until expiration or the person is getting a permit for the first time. The person can fill out an application at the Union County Sheriff’s Office, located at 302 N. Pine St. Some training, such as through the military or with a certified instructor, for a new permit has to be on file in Union County. There

is no need to bring in new information for this kind of permit if the person had one in the county previously. For those renewing their permits, they would have to have a permit issued in Union County and have 30 days or more left. If the person meets those requirements, he or she also has to show new training within 12 months prior to renewing. “I think people are getting a little concerned that they need to run out there and get new training,” Chapman said. Trainings can be online or in person, as long as the instructor is certified through law enforcement or National Rifle Association. Iowa law also specifies a person

renewing his or her permit can choose to qualify on a range under the supervision of a certified instructor instead of going through training. The cost of a new permit is $50, and a renewed permit is $25. There is a $5 Please see PERMIT, Page 2

American Red Cross encourages donors to give blood before the holiday season. ■

The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood before the holiday season is in full swing. Blood donations often decline from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day when holiday festivities pull people away from their donation appointments. This often causes a drop in the blood available for patients. Donations are needed in the weeks leading up to the holidays to help offset this seasonal decline.

Donors with all blood types are needed, and especially those with types O negative, B negative, A negative and AB blood. To make an appointment to donate blood, download the free Red Cross Blood Donor app from app stores, visit redcrossblood. org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donors can now use the Blood Donor app to access their donor card and view vital signs from previous donations. Upcoming blood donation opportunities in Creston are noon to 6 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 800 N. Sumner or 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10 at the SWCC Instructional Building, 1501 W. Townline.

Mexico bracing for Category 5 hurricane PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Patricia headed toward southwestern Mexico Friday as a monster Category 5 storm, the strongest ever in the Western Hemisphere that forecasters said could make a “potentially catastrophic landfall” later in the day. Residents of a stretch of Mexico’s Pacific Coast dotted with resorts and fishing villages on Thursday had already boarded up homes

and bought supplies ahead of Patricia’s arrival. Some evacuations were reported in Puerto Vallarta. With maximum sustained winds near 200 mph (325 kph), Patricia is the strongest storm ever recorded in the eastern Pacific or in the Atlantic, said Dave Roberts, a hurricane specialist at the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Patricia’s power was comparable to that of Typhoon Haiyan, which left more

than 7,300 dead or missing in the Philippines two years ago, according to the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization. More than 4 million people were displaced and over 1 million houses were destroyed or damaged in 44 provinces in the central Visayas region, a large cluster of islands that includes some of the country’s poorest provinces.
