The fourth Democrat to join the primary race for the right to compete in Iowa’s gubernatorial general election visited Creston Saturday. Paul Dahl, 49, of Webster City, spent a majority of the morning shaking hands with Crestonians at various coffee

shops and popular breakfast stops. “I think I’m the only candidate among the d e m o c r a t s Dahl that can take on Branstad out in the rural areas,” Dahl said. Currently working as a transit bus driver in Webster City,

Dahl also has experience as an adjunct professor at Iowa Central Community College, librarian and pastor. “I want to be known as the candidate who is Mr. Ethics,” Dahl said. Dahl is campaigning against fellow democrats Tyler Olsen, Jack Hatch and Bob Krause. He is the only one of the four without state legislative experience, but did run for a congressional seat in 1994 in Iowa’s

former 5th district. “I don’t think that is a weakness,” Dahl said. “Being a state legislator is different than being a governor.” He also claims voters will see him do more with less money spent on the campain trail. “I’m running my campaign right now as if this was a general election,” Dahl said. “You Please see DAHL, Page 5

EDUCATION STANDARDS dents,” McDermott said. “We want students pushed to their full potential. But again, so much of this is mandated to us, we just do what we can to make sure we are in compliance.” Common Core mandates students in each grade level reach a certain proficiency in each core subject. 80 to 85 percent of the Common Core curriculum is mandated, and 15 to 20 percent is focused on local culture.

Gov. Terry Branstad signed an executive order Thursday, which stated local Iowa school districts will maintain control of their own curriculum through Iowa Core. Iowa Core is a standardsbased curriculum created after the nation passed the Common Core educational initiative, which standardized state education. “It’s a set of standards so that, the thinking is, across the country, everyone will have rigorous curriculum in their schools,” said Steve McDermott, Creston School District superintendent.

Executive order The order states “the state of Iowa, not the federal government or any other organization, shall determine the content of Iowa’s state academic standards, which are known as the Iowa Core.” The order also states those in Iowa will choose the assessments used to measure student achievement in Iowa Core, and collection of data by school districts and the Iowa Department of Education will be consistent with

state and federal laws intended to protect privacy, so that only data from students as a whole will be provided to the federal government. “I see that the governor is doing what he can to make sure folks understand that Iowa as a state is making decisions for our local Iowa students,” said McDermott, “and that we’re not completely controlled by the federal

goverment.” McDermott said he doesn’t believe there are strong disagreements in standardizing education, but that it comes back to student assessment of the standards. “There are challenges, always, with alignment and making sure students are learning the appropriate lessons, and that our curriculum is rigorous enough for stu-

CHS band receives I rating at state competition GLENWOOD — The Creston Panther Marching Band continued its tradition of excellence Saturday during the Iowa High School State Marching Band Festival. The CHS band received a I rating — the highest available rating. This is the 25th consecutive year the Panther band has received a I rating at state. “This was the most important event of the year for our band, and we delivered our best performance,” said Mike Peters, CHS band director. “We extended our streak to 25 years. We had several positive comments including judges comments about our show. It all came together.” Creston, Harlan and Glenwood were the only Hawkeye 10 schools receiving a I rating. With the marching season now complete, Peters said focus now shifts to concert band, drumline and jazz band auditions, as well as All-State auditions slated for this coming weekend.
