ESGR program connects employers with military Iowa Workforce and ESGR will hold the program Nov. 22 at The Pizza Ranch in Creston. ■

A program to help local businesses connect with active members of the National Guard and Reserves, as well as veterans, is slated for Nov. 22 in Creston.

Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) partnered with Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) Region 14 for an inter- Waigand active, two-hour program at The Pizza Ranch. “We support employing our veterans,” said IWD representative Elizabeth Waigand. “We want to have veteran-friendly businesses to help the veterans coming home.

ESGR helps make those connections.” The event will highlight how to understand a resumé that uses military language, how to connect with active military employees and veterans, how ESGR can help employers and it will give important details of the laws that protect active military and veterans. “It’s all the pieces that employers need to know so they don’t discriminate military personnel,” said Becky Coady, a program support technician with ESGR. Coady said some employers do

not understand the specific skill sets learned by individuals who serve because it is described by their rank on their resumé. ESGR helps explain the leadership skills and experience gained during the members time with the Guard and Reserve. “This is a proactive workshop,” Waigand said. “I believe a majority of our employers support hiring because of their work ethic and leadership skills.” IWF Region 14 covers eight counties — Adams, Adair, Clarke, Ringgold, Taylor, Montgomery,

Union and Decatur. Coady said the workshop typically draws about 20 to 30 representatives from different employers. She added the small size helps make the program more engaging and allows time for any questions to be addressed. Waigand said IWF tries to bring the workshop to the region every year, but because it is a large region, they try to move the host site to different counties each year. Please see ESGR, Page 2

QUICK NEWS Creston Marching Band heads to state

More than 20 students of all ages participated in a skateboarding exhibition called iSkate, uSkate at McKinley Park Thursday evening. The event was coordinated by a group called I Belong, which encourages local students and faculty to support and be there for one another. Another skateboarding exhibition is planned for this spring.

The Creston Panther Marching Band placed fifth in the morning and evening shows last Saturday at Valleyfest in Des Moines. In all, 12 bands competed in the invite-only event. “The competition is always stiff at Valleyfest,” said Mike Peters, CHS band director. “It’s the best of the best. That said, this is the best we have ever done at Valleyfest. Our band really brought it. I was very happy with the performances.” This Saturday, the CHS band Peters travels to Glenwood for the Iowa High School State Marching Band Festival. Glenwood will host all four classes. The event starts at 9 a.m. with the CHS band performing at 1:15 p.m. The Panthers have set a goal of receiving a I rating — the highest available rating. “It won’t be easy,” Peters said, “but if we do, it will make 25 years the Panther band has received a I rating at state.”

In May, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff released three trumpeter swans at Summit Lake in Creston. They were 11-month-old cygnet swans weighing approximately 22 pounds with necks measuring about 24-inches long. They are part of the DNR’s statewide trumpeter swan restoration effort. Local photographer Tom Danilovich of Creston captured this photo (see above) of the two female swans this morning. Both swans were located on the north side of Green Valley Lake. He also spotted them Thursday morning. “They were just sitting there feeding on some moss (Thursday), ducking their heads in the water,” Danilovich said.
