nodaway valley elementary project

School board hires construction manager By IAN RICHARDSON

GREENFIELD — Nodaway Valley Community Schools is one step closer to replacing the oldest building in its district. That step came Monday night when the district’s board of education named Hansen Company Inc. the manager of its new elementary school construction project. Casey Berlau, Nodaway Valley superintendent, said the elementary building, which was built in the mid-1950s, has needed renova-

tions for several years in areas including flooring, ceiling, electricity and plumbing. Berlau said after conducting a facilities study, the school realized Berlau making changes would mean disturbing asbestos and making several changes to comply with updated building code. “We have all kinds of things that have been grandfathered in,” Berlau said. “When you start looking

into maybe upgrading or fixing those things, we would have gotten into a situation where we’d have to follow current Iowa building code.” Roger Jensen, Nodaway Valley school board president, said the building has run its course. “It’s one of those deals where it was almost cheaper to build a new one than renovate the old one,” Jensen said. In the September school elections, local voters approved a $9.4 million bond to construct the new elementary. The bond had previously failed to pass during an

election in February, which Jensen said was due to lack of interest in the original design. New features for this building include a permanent library and media center, larger lunch, art and physical education areas and a safe room. “Right now, our current elementary does not have a safe room,” Berlau said. “That’s definitely something we’re excited about when we think about student safety.” This elementary building will also have the capacity to accommodate the fifth grade, which is

currently using the middle school at Fontanelle. During Monday’s meeting, the board also discussed the building design and location and approved bids for surveying and soil testing. Berlau said possible locations are north and east of the current building. He said he hopes to be able to use the current elementary building during the construction of the new one to avoid bringing in portable classrooms. The old elementary is then planned to be Please see SCHOOL, Page 2

Adams Street bridge in Creston to close Oct. 20, 21

Harvest weather: Clint Travis runs a combine through his soybean field east of Creston Thursday afternoon. According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture’s weekly weather report released Tuesday, the warm, dry weather conditions allowed Iowa farmers to harvest nearly onethird of the state’s soybean crop last week, bringing the total harvest to 65 percent on beans and 29 percent on corn. With ideal weather continuing this week, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey said Tuesday that number should continue to rise. (CNA photo by IAN RICHARDSON)

On Tuesday, Adams Street between Lake Shore Drive and Cottonwood Street will be closed from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. The area will reopen overnight, but will close again 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday. The closure is needed so crews can conduct soil test bores for the upcoming replacement of the Adams Street bridge.

SWCC construction delay due to asbestos By KELSEY HAUGEN

Construction delay

The board of directors discussed official fall enrollment numbers, a delay in construction due to asbestos and the new Regional Entrepreneurship Project in Union and Adams counties during a Southwestern Community College (SWCC) meeting Tuesday.

Work in the 200-bay hallway of the instructional building at SWCC has again been delayed, said Tom Lesan, SWCC vice president of economic development. “Last Friday, Oct. 2, we were notified by the contractor that they had a suspicion there was asbestos in the ceiling material in the 200-bay hallway,” Lesan said. “Work stopped, workers

were sent home and we secured the area.” On the following Sunday, SWCC brought in Iowa Environmental Services from Urbandale to take samples. The next morning, it was confirmed there was asbestos in the ceiling. “The process will be a little slow, but anytime you get outside entities involved and have asbestos, you’re going to follow the rules,” Lesan said. “We’re definitely fol-

lowing protocol.” He hopes SWCC will have a contract in place by the end of the week to abate the issue. “I really can’t give much more of a timeline right now,” Lesan said.

Fall enrollment

Beth Kulow, SWCC dean of student services, reported the official fall headcount is 1,656 students – an increase of 3.4 percent since last year. The official fall credit hour total is 16,403, which

is a 2.4 percent increase. Compared to enrollment at other Iowa community colleges, Kulow said SWCC is in good shape. “I think it’s fair to say we fall a little above the top half,” she said. “In data from across the state, we see a 7 percent increase down to an 11 percent decrease in Please see SWCC, Page 2
