Candidate forum slated for Oct. 19 Creston News Advertiser and KSIB Radio will host a candidate forum for the three-way Creston mayor race 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at the nursing lecture hall inside the Allied Health building on Southwestern Community College’s campus. The three candidates
running for Creston mayor are Gary Lybarger, Laryl Vandenberg and Warren Woods. All three have confirmed they will attend this forum. There will be a question and answer period during this forum. Submit your question to kwilson@ crestonnews.com

Though the music program at Southwestern Community College was the initial reason Elizabeth Sadler came to Creston from Canada, she has been pleasantly surprised with another benefit the college offers: a rich cultural experience. “I didn’t realize how much life experience I’d gain here,” said Sadler, 20. “Even though it’s a small town, there are people from all over – so many different states and countries. I think
it’s helping shape me as a person.” Sadler is a mezzo soprano vocalist from Winnipeg, Manitoba, studying professional music at SWCC. Now a sophomore, she is in

Sadler attended the camp and became acquainted with SWCC her junior and senior years of high school in Winnipeg. After graduating high school, Sadler attended the University of Manitoba for one year before realizing she definitely wanted to pursue music. From there, her decision was simple. She applied to the SWCC music program. State Rep. Jack Drake dies at 81 By IAN RICHARDSON

State Rep. Jack Drake, R-Griswold, who has represented District 21 in the Iowa House since 1992, has died. He was 81 years old. State Sen. Tom Shipley, R-Nodaway, said Drake died Sunday morning. Shipley said Drake had been ill for some time. “Jack was as conscientious a representative of his district as you could ever find,” Shipley said. “He was very much in tune, and he made himself very visible to be in touch with what people were doing and thinking. He’s go-
ing to be greatly missed. He was very respected both in the capitol and Drake his district.” According to the Iowa House Republicans website, Drake was currently serving as chairman of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Budget Committee and also sat on the Agriculture, Appropriations and State Government committees. For the past four years, the brothers have worked the route together, delivering both newspapers and shoppers. Saturday was International Newspaper Carrier Day, a salute to the hundreds of thousands of newspaper carriers who deliver to 130 million print readers every week.
