Panther band top Branstad not aware three at Clarinda commissioner is gay CLARINDA — The Creston High School Panther marching band placed second in field and third in the parade competition at the 59th annual Southwest Iowa Band Jamboree in Clarinda Saturday. This was the band’s first competition of the year. “We actually scored higher this year, than last year when we won at Clarinda,” said Mike Peters, band director at CHS. “That just speaks to the competition this year with 10

extra bands coming including Waverly, which is near Lincoln.” The Panthers competed in Class 3A at the Jamboree, which included a total of seven from across Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska. DES MOINES (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad and top aides say they weren’t aware that a former state official was gay when the governor asked him to resign and cut his pay. In affidavits filed last week, Branstad, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds and four aides said Christopher Godfrey wasn’t singled out because of sexual orientation.

If you do not receive your CNA by 5 p.m. call 641-782-2141, ext. 6450. Papers will be redelivered in Creston until 6:30 p.m. Phones will be answered until 7 p.m.

Godfrey, the state’s former workers’ compensation commissioner, is suing over what Branstad he calls their heavy-handed and illegal attempts to force his resignation. After he declined,

the governor cut Godfrey’s pay by $40,000, to the lowest allowed for the position. Godfrey’s lawsuit alleges discrimination based on sexual orientation, extortion and defamation. Godfrey’s attorney has filed a motion arguing that Branstad’s lawyer has a conflict and should be removed. The affidavits are part of an attempt to defeat that motion.
