They’re all in their late 30s now, with adult responsibilities in their careers and as parents. But for a couple of hours Saturday afternoon, the 1997 Creston state championship basketball team got together and took a trip back in time. Before they were honored on the 20th anniversary of their championship at halftime of the boys game during Saturday’s varsity doubleheader against Red Oak, a reception for the team in the school library brought together all but two players and one manager from that 23-1 season, which included a 74-57 victory over Pella in the Class 3A championship game. Point guard Brady Steenhoek had not been back in Creston since 1999, when his brother Corey gradu-

ated from Creston High School. Now an assistant principal at a charter school for at-risk students in Phoenix, Arizona, Steenhoek relished the opportunity to reconnect with teammates. Sometimes the line of conversation had nothing to do with basketball. “You know, in this day and age of cell phones I imagine bus rides are much different,” Steenhoek said. “But I just remember some of the ridiculous times we
had on the bus. It wasn’t bad stuff. Just the fun and the songs, hanging out with each other. We enjoyed basketball practice and we enjoyed being around each other. It made playing together a lot of fun.” Former all-state guard Kyle McCann, who went on to a career as a quarterback for the University of Iowa, appreciated the chance to see fellow team members. “It’s been fun to get reacquainted with a lot of peo-

BURLINGTON (AP) — A judge could hear arguments from an Iowa newspaper in April as it seeks records related to a fatal 2015 police shooting in Burlington. The Hawk Eye reports an April 19 hearing has been scheduled in its effort to obtain police videos and other records. Burlington officer Jesse Hill accidentally shot 34-year-old Autumn Steele in January 2015 while responding to a fight between Steele and her husband. The newspaper and Steele’s family want to see investigative files related to the shooting. Burlington police and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are resisting
the open records request. They say they have fulfilled what the law requires by releasing basic details about the shooting and a 12-second video from Hill’s body camera. The agencies’ lawyers argue that the Division of Criminal Investigation went beyond what was required by releasing the video clip, so they have filed motions to dismiss the records case. The judge will rule on those motions before deciding whether to go forward with the April hearing. The case centers on the question of whether the exemption from open records law for law enforcement RECORDS | 2A
