CCHS sends 13 entries to Report: State Large Group Speech 1,700 Iowa firefighters given invalid certifications IOWA CITY (AP) — More than 1,700 Iowa firefighters and emergency responders were issued improper credentials over a four-year period due to flawed test scoring at the state fire academy, according to a report released Tuesday. The Iowa Department of Public Safety announced that a former employee, John McPhee, was charged with felony misconduct in office and tampering with records in connection with the improper certifications. McPhee, the state’s former
Training Service Bureau Certification and Accreditation Coordinator, turned himself in Tuesday to the Story County Sheriff’s Office in Nevada, Iowa. McPhee and the bureau’s former chief, Randal Novak, were placed on paid administrative leave April 25. Last May, the bureau notified firefighters and emergency responders that it had discovered “errors in the scoring of various exams” during an internal audit and that a review found that many former REPORT | 2A

The Creston Community High School large group speech team entered 18 groups in Saturday’s district competition at Clarke Community High School in Osceola, with 13 of those entries receiving Division-I ratings and advancing to the state competition. The State Large Group Speech Contest is Saturday, Feb. 4, at Valley High School in West Des Moines. There, entries earning Division-I ratings and outstanding nominations from at least two out of the three judges advance to the AllState Festival Saturday, Feb. 18, at Iowa State University in Ames. “There’s some groups I think definitely have some
potential toward that, but it’s definitely a gamble,” said Laura Granger, CCHS l a r g e g r o u p speech coach. “It’s not g u a r anteed, for sure. H o p e - Granger fully we get some kids that get that honor.” In her second year as CCHS large group speech coach, Granger was able to enter more groups into the district contest this year thanks to having three volunteer coaches. CCHS Individual Speech Coach Danielle Dickinson also assists with the team. Volunteer coaches this year are Kylie Haggerty, Keith Worland and Miguel
Villegas. The team includes about 60 students participating in the 18 entry groups. The 13 entries advancing to the state competition include choral reading, reader’s theatre, two group improvs, two one-act plays, group mime, two musical theatres, radio broadcasting, two short films and ensemble acting. “We pretty much participated in all categories,” Granger said. “The only ones we didn’t (participate in) were solo mime and TV news. Otherwise, we’ve got something in every category they offer.” Musical theatre entries are “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Hairspray.” Choral reading is “Choral is the New Black.” Reader’s theatre is “Murder in the Knife Room,” a murder mystery. Dow hits 20,000 following solid open for US stocks The Dow Jones industrial average crossed the 20,000 mark for the first time Wednesday, the latest milestone in a record-setting drive for the stock market. The other major U.S. stock indexes were also moving higher in morning trading, led by banks and other financial companies. Strong earnings from Boeing and other big companies drove the rally, extending gains from the day before. Keeping score: The Dow gained 162 points, or 0.8 percent, to 20,075 as of 11:04 a.m. Eastern Time. The Standard
& Poor’s 500 index rose 16 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,296. The Nasdaq composite index added 47 points, or 0.9 percent, to 5,648. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq each closed at record highs on Tuesday. Dow milestone: The market has been marching steadily higher since bottoming out in March 2009 in the aftermath of the financial crisis. The rally continued after the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president last fall. The Dow first closed above 10,000 on March 29, 1999.
