UK’s May signals clean break with EU: No partial membership LONDON (AP) — More than six months after Britain voted to leave the European Union, British Prime Minister Theresa May finally spelled out what it means: The U.K. will make a clean break from the EU and leave its single market of around 500 million people.

In her most detailed remarks since the June 23 vote, May said Tuesday that Britain must regain control of its laws and borders, even as she called on the bloc to negotiate a free-trade agreement that will benefit both sides.

Creston Police Department is now an employee short.

Minko, the Creston Police K-9, was retired from his position Dec. 29 because of age and health issues.

The decision to retire the police dog has been in the works for several months, when, in September, Creston Police Chief Paul Ver Meer expressed the issue to Creston City Council members at a board meeting.

“He developed some arthritis in his back, and before it got too bad we wanted to let him retire

Minko was born in Germany and trained by North Iowa K-9 out of Fort Dodge. He was purchased for $10,000 in donations more than five years ago. After his first handler, Creston Police Sergeant Jared Auten, needed shoulder surgery, Senior Patrolman Jayrd Merritt took over the responsibility.

The first day Merritt was on duty with Minko in March 2012, he said he wondered until the dog “learned who was in charge, I figured I’d be getting bit a few times.”

Now, though, Merritt’s view of the dog, who he considers people-friend-

“It’s a lot of fun. It’s a lot of work,” Merritt said. “It’s basically having another kid, that’s the Merritt easiest way to put it.”

“He said that he is going to represent all Americans.

He said that over and over again,” Martin Luther King III told reporters in the lobby of Trump Tower Monday after a nearly hour-long meeting. “I believe that’s his

intent.”

Trump met with King’s son on the holiday marking the life of the assassinated civil rights icon, just days after the president-elect had gone on Twitter to strike back fiercely at Lewis for questioning the legitimacy of the billionaire businessman’s election as president.

Linda Elaine Clark, 80, of Phoenix, Arizona, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, in a hospice home in Phoenix.

As per her wishes, she was cremated and no services were planned.

Linda, daughter of Raymond and Eleanor (Davenport) Madden, was born Dec. 16, 1936, in Shannon City. She graduated from Creston High School in 1955.

She married Fay (Butch) Clark in November 1956.

Linda is survived by daughters, Cindy Trenkle of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Kathy Conrow of Bisbee, Arizona; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild and brothers Duane (Marian) Madden of Fair Bolt, Minnesota, and Wayne (Angela) Madden of Creston.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2009, her parents, brother Jerry (Carol) Madden of Holland, Michigan, and her nephew, Jeff. uncle, Dallas and Lucille Meisenheimer, whom he called his parents. Shorty graduated from Menlo High School with the class of 1967.

Following his graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam War. On Oct. 26, 1974, Shorty married Judy Irene Mitchell in Lorimor. Together they had four children, Melissa, Lindsay, Dallas and Travis.

They resided in Afton, where Shorty was a farmer. Shorty also worked as the custodian for East Union High School for 30 years. He retired from there in 2009 at the age of 60.

Shorty was a member of the American Legion Post No. 96 of Lorimor.

Shorty is survived by his two daughters, Melissa Wimber of Afton and Lindsay (Eric) Johnsen of Ames; two sons, Dallas (Michele) McCarthy of Broomfield, Colorado, and Travis (Juanita) McCarthy of Macksburg; mother Lucille Meisenheimer of Winterset; grandchildren, Kimberly De Long (fiance Adam Hoffman), Carter Johnsen, Cole Wimber, Dylan Wimber, Ava McCarthy and Gia McCarthy; sister Rosemary (Gary) Barrett of Guthrie Center and John Meisenheimer of Winterset.

Shorty was preceded in death by his biological parents and father Dallas Meisenheimer. burial in Bryant Cemetery in rural Fontanelle at a later date. The Rev. Cathy Nutting will officiate the service.

GM to add or keep 7,000 jobs, make $1B factory investment DETROIT (AP) — General Motors plans to invest $1 billion in U.S. factories and add thousands of new white-collar jobs, measures that have been in the works for years but announced Tuesday after criticism from President-elect Donald Trump.

In all, the Detroit automaker said it will create or keep 7,000 jobs in the next few years, including about 2,000 at its factories. Another 5,000 new positions will be created at its auto financing arm and to develop advanced technology, electric and autonomous vehicles

The British pound rallied on having some clarity at last. The currency was recovering from steep losses earlier in the week, trading 2.2 percent higher at $1.2309. On Monday, it was as low as $1.20, a near 31year low.

Currency traders liked that the matter would be put to Parliament, giving May a chance to tame the excesses of the more fervent Brexiteers, said Kathleen Brooks, research director of City Index.

“But, even this concession cannot hide the fact that the U.K. wants the best parts of the EU, with a cherry on the top, which could make the next two years extremely tense,” she said.

“So, the pound is not out of the woods yet.”

In a bid to alleviate fears that Brexit will mean a more insular Britain, May said she wants the country to be “stronger, fairer, more united and more outward-looking than ever before.”

In an attempt to symbolize the U.K.’s outward-facing aspirations, May spoke before an audience of British civil servants and international diplomats at Lon-

don’s Lancaster House, a Georgian mansion that has hosted international summits.

Britain is quitting the EU’s single market in goods and services in order to gain control over immigration — a key issue for many voters who backed Brexit. EU leaders say Britain can’t stay in the single market without allowing free movement of people from the bloc.

May was firm on the immigration question, saying it was a key reason people voted to leave. But she softened the message by saying she wants Britain to guarantee the right to remain of EU citizens in Britain, and British citizens elsewhere in the bloc.

“It remains an important priority for Britain — and for many other member states — to resolve this challenge as soon as possible,” she said.

Losing single-market access alarms many in Britain’s huge financial services sector, which relies on an ability to do business seamlessly across the 28-nation bloc. It also worries the many foreign firms that use London not only as a financial hub but as an entry point into the EU. But the financial sector warmed to the idea of a free trade arrangement and liked that the time of uncertainty was drawing to a close.

“Today the prime minister changed the landscape ...,” said Carolyn Fairbairn, the director-general of the business group, Confederation of Business Industries.

“Businesses will welcome the greater clarity and the

ambition to create a more prosperous, open and global Britain, with the freest possible trade between the UK and the EU.” May has repeatedly said she would invoke Article 50 of the EU’s key treaty by March 31, to formally begin a two-year process of negotiating Britain’s departure.

But she has until now refused to reveal details about the government’s goals or negotiating strategy, arguing that to do so would weaken Britain’s hand.

May also used her speech to appeal for reconciliation between the 48 percent of British voters who wanted to stay in the EU and the pro-Brexit 52 percent. But the gap between “remainers” and “leavers” appears as wide as ever.

There was a thinly veiled threat, though, in her remarks, suggesting that punitive action wasn’t good for either the EU or Britain.

Treasury chief Philip Hammond has suggested that the country would consider offering a break on corporation taxes if necessary, to encourage investment.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said she appeared to be warning that she was ready to turn the U.K. into a “low-corporate taxation, bargain basement economy off the shores of Europe” if the EU didn’t give her everything she wanted.

“She makes out this is a negotiating threat to the 27 EU countries, but it’s actually a threat to the British people’s jobs, services and living standards,” Corbyn said.

According to Ver Meer, Merritt was able to purchase Minko for $1, whereby he took over all maintenance and care, as well as liability.

Erik Wesley Witt, 38, 906 E. Howard St., was charged on a Union County warrant for second-offense possession of a controlled substance 3:54 p.m. Friday at Union County Law Enforcement Center.

According to a Creston Police report, Witt was in possession of marijuana 10:47 p.m. Sunday while outside a private business. Witt had a bag containing marijuana in his back pocket and a metal pipe with residue in his front left pocket.

Witt was released on $1,000 bond.

—————— Destany Dawn Degonia, 20, 803 W. Adams St. Apt. 3., was charged with interference with official acts and accessory after the fact 11 p.m. Friday in the 800 block of West Adams Street.

According to a Creston Police report, Degonia was an accessory after the fact by deliberately harboring a juvenile who was wanted for felony-level charges. She was dishonest with officers in an attempt to keep officers from apprehending the minor.

Degonia was released on $2,000 bond.

—————— Joshua David Coulter, 31, 306 W. Montgomery St., was charged with public intoxication 2 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of North Sumner Avenue and West Montgomery Street.

According to a Creston Police report, officers responded to a disturbance at 516 W. Mills St. Officers learned the subject had left prior to arrival. The subject, who was identified as Coulter, was later located at the intersection of North Sumner Avenue and West Montgomery Street.

Coulter was released on $300 bond.

—————— Patricia Ann McFail, 31, of Clarinda was charged with driving while suspended and unlawful possession of a prescription drug or device midnight Sunday at Union County Law Enforcement Center.

According to a Creston Police report, McFail was

in possession of 10 ampules of carbocaine lidocaine with epinephrine. The drug would need to be obtained with a prescription or by a licensed physician.

McFail was released on $1,000 bond.

—————— Mikhail Matthew Smith, 19, of Maryville, Missouri, was charged on a Union County warrant for first-degree theft 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Union County Law Enforcement Center.

According to a Union County Sheriff report, dispatchers received a call from a subject saying he had stolen a vehicle from Missouri and was broke down in the 2000 block of Highway 169. Upon arrival, officers met with the passenger in the vehicle, Smith. Smith said he and his friend, Matthew Petersen, had stolen the vehicle from Gregory Smith of Maryville, Missouri, his father’s residence.

Dispatch ran the vehicle’s information and the vehicle did come back stolen out of Missouri.

Smith was transported to Union County Law Enforcement Center. The vehicle was towed. Once at the law enforcement center, Maryville Police officers were contacted and it was confirmed the vehicle was stolen and the owner wanted to press charges.

Smith was being held on $10,000 bond.

—————— Allen McKinney of Lorimor reported a Salamander heater and five gallons of gasoline were taken between Jan. 9 and Monday from his garage.

Loss estimate is $665.

FORT DODGE – Shellabration Inc. received an early Christmas present. The organization has confirmed Huey Lewis and the News as headliner for Shellabration 2017.

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, July 8, at Rogers Sports Complex (Fort Dodge Soccer Association Fields) in Fort Dodge. Having settled for a Thursday night booking last year due to unfavorable tour routing and artist availability, the 2017 show will be the first one to take place on Saturday night since the organization hosted Styx in 2013.

“Despite the weeknight event last summer, we still managed to attract more than 7,100 attendees,” said Shellabration President Jim Reed. “It was our third straight year of attendance in excess of 7,000, with 7,400 at Lynyrd Skynyrd in 2014 and 8,100 at Boston in 2015.

Saturday night is always our first choice when it comes to attracting out-of-town music fans. Hopefully we’ll be able to keep our string of 7,000plus in attendance intact.”

Huey Lewis and the News broke onto the scene in 1982 with the album “Picture This” including the hit song “Do You Believe in Love” along with the song “Workin’ for a Livin’.” It was the album entitled “Sports” in 1984 that became a number one charted album and catapulted them to multiplatinum success with four Top10 hits including “Heart and Soul,” “I Want a New Drug,” “The Heart of Rock and Roll” and “If This Is It.” They achieved a number 1 single in 1985 when “The Power of Love” was used in the movie “Back to the Future.” Huey Lewis actually made a cameo appearance in the film. That movie also featured a song entitled “Back in Time” written for the flick by the artist. Their follow-up album spawned the hit singles “Stuck With You,” “Ja-

cob’s Ladder” and “Hip to Be Square.” Other hits include “Doing It All for My Baby,” “Walking on a Thin Line” and “It’s All Right.”

The band has scored a total of 16 Top 10 singles.

This year’s Shellabration will again feature two opening acts with ties to the Fort Dodge region.

“It’s one of our favorite traditions,” said incoming Shellabration Vice-President Ted Bodensteiner.”As organizers, we get to live their excitement vicariously. I think people are going to be excited when we make the announcement in January.”

Tickets for Shellabration 2017 featuring Huey Lewis and the News go on sale Saturday, March 25, at midnight. They will cost $36 in advance and increase to $45 beginning Monday, June 19, leading up to the show on Saturday, July 8.

RL — a mentor and friend on and off the job Procrastination never works.

Earlier this month, Korina Loudon of Creston created an “event” on Facebook to wish Ron Levine a happy new year, and include some memories that you shared together, or something involving Ron that meant something to you personally.

I wrote down a note in my kitchen to buy a card for Ron and send it to him at his assisted living residence. I’d spent many sessions talking ball and just “life” in his home on Spruce Street, but had not visited him at his new place, so I thought maybe I’d even drop the card off personally and have a chat.

Of course, something always seemed to get in the way and I didn’t make it enough of a priority.

Now it’s too late.

Ron Levine had a lifelong interest in baseball, playing and coaching for the Stanton town team that often played games at McKinley Field in Creston. Levine was a Stanton native who was captain of the Simpson College baseball team. He was known in Creston as a passionate Chicago White Sox fan.

when I moved here in the fall of 1984. As a newspaper reporter who did sports and covered the schools for the news department, I naturally became very familiar with both.

They were opposites as personalities, but they formed a great team at CHS. Ron was my “go-to” guy when it was hard for me to decide how to approach a sensitive story, and balance my job as a public information source when it came to reporting on kids and coaches. He always had the right answers. Ron was a good person and he helped others become better people.

When I started coaching junior high basketball, first at St. Malachy and later at the middle school, Ron was coaching seventh-grade basketball for the public school.

I observed his practices and even got some practice plans from him that I still possess.

Ron coached baseball with Ron “Fox” Clinton at CHS and as you might imagine, it was a contest of who could tell the longest story on bus rides. I loved hearing Ron’s stories, as recently as last summer when I saw him at a Creston Panthers baseball game. We talked about his White Sox, and the incredible season underway by the crosstown Cubbies.

Back in my early days of coaching across town at St. Malachy, Ron was coaching seventh grade with Kurt Bremer and Curt Olson, if you can imagine that. And he was doing it at age 76. His final season (2005-06) he coached with grandson Scott Levine, which was a special winter for both of them, despite victories being elusive.

I’m coaching at age 59 and wondering how long those kids will put up with such an old curmudgeon.

So to think of doing it another 17 years is a little daunting. But he did a great job.

Some of his former players were joking about playing for Ron one recent night when we dined at A&G. They laughed, saying RL made them run or do pushups if they missed a layup in pregame!

He was a stickler for discipline, which many kids need.

Ringling Brothers is shutting down the Greatest Show on Earth circus in May after 150 years. The performers will always be in demand. The clowns who follow the elephants in the circus parade and sweep up after them can always get jobs as press secretaries in Washington D.C. Steve Harvey appeared with Donald Trump at Trump Tower in New York, where he enlisted his help in Trump’s plan to help rebuild America’s inner cities.

On the same day that Steve Harvey backed Trump, Nicole Kidman vowed to support Trump.

They’re the first two celebrity deaths of 2017.

House Speaker Paul Ryan conceded to reporters Friday that Donald Trump is going to be an unconventional president.

He’s a comedian’s dream. You know it’s going to be fun when you hear a news story about the president-elect getting peed on, and your reaction is to wait for the weird part.

Congressman John L. Lewis went on “Meet the Press” and intoned that Donald Trump is not a legitimate president. The president-elect is getting it from all sides. A recent study found that Nutella causes cancer and the maker defended the product by claiming that Trump will kill us first anyway.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch came to Chicago Friday to announce a probe finding that the Chicago police are racist. It’s difficult to be politically correct while you are dodging bullets all the time. The Chicago police are the only cops who get rotated to Syria every six months for a little R&R. President Obama’s invitation to join the Longmont Golf and Country Club in Maryland could be rescinded by the predominately Jewish club due to Obama’s recent Israel policy. The game isn’t good for you anyway. Golf is a long walk broken up by swearing, disappointment and bad math.

The Geneva Auto Show in Switzerland this weekend spotlighted the rollout of Bentley’s new Grand Musanne limousine for car reviewers. The passenger compartment offers conference style seating for six people. The interior is so luxurious, the cup holder is an Englishman named Reginald.

What happens between now and Ringling’s closure in May? ELLENTON, Fla. (AP) — The owners of Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus announced Saturday that they will close the 146-year-old show in May. Kenneth Feld, the chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment, which owns the circus, said declining attendance combined with high operating costs are the reasons for closing.

WHAT WILL Ringling Bros. has two HAPPEN TO THE touring circuses this season: “Circus Extreme� EMPLOYEES? and “Out of This World.�

The Feld family has owned the circus for 49 years, and employs some 500 people for the show. Those employees were told about the closure on Saturday night, after

shows in Orlando and Miami.

A handful will be placed in positions with the company’s other shows — it owns Monster Jam, Disney on Ice and Marvel Live, among other things — but most will be out of a job. Chief Operating Officer Juliette Feld said the company will help employees with job placement and resumes. In some cases where a circus employee lives on the tour rail car (the circus travels by train), the company will also help with housing relocation.

That museum holds memorabilia dating to the 1800s, when John Ringling and his family founded Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus.

Blatty returned to the “Exorcist� setting in “Legion,� which he adapted into “The Exorcist III.� He also revised a novel from the 1960s, “Twinkle, Twinkle, ‘Killer Kane’’’; renamed it “The Ninth Configuration� and wrote and directed a 1980 film version that brought Blatty a Golden Globe for best screenplay. In 2011, he worked in a new scene for a reissue of the 1971 novel, originally acquired by Bantam Books for a reported $250,000. More recently, Fox announced it would revive the story as a TV series, starring Geena Davis.

University official as “the most impressive example of poltergeist phenomena I have ever come across.� “Like so many Catholics, I’ve had so many little battles of wavering faith over the course of my life,� Blatty, who would allege numerous mysterious events while working on the book, told IGN.com. “And when I heard about this case and read the details, that seemed so compelling. I thought, ‘My God, if someone were to investigate this and authenticate it, what a tremendous boost to faith it would be.’ I thought, ‘Someday I would like to see that happen. You know, I would like to do it.’�

NEW YORK (AP) — Novelist and filmmaker William Peter Blatty, a former Jesuit school valedictorian who conjured a tale of demonic possession and gave millions the fright of their lives with the best-selling novel and Oscar-winning movie “The Exorcist,� has died. He was 89.

Blatty died Thursday at a hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, where he lived, his widow, Julie Alicia Blatty, told The Associated Press.

The cause of death was multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, she said.

Inspired by an incident that unfolded in St. Louis and Washington, D.C., that Blatty had read about while in college, “The Exorcist� was published in 1971, followed two years later by the film of the same name. Blatty’s story of a 12-year-oldgirl inhabited by a satanic force spent more than a year on The New York Times fiction best-seller list and eventually sold more than 10 million copies. It reached a far wider audience through the movie version, directed by William Friedkin, produced and written by Blatty and starring Linda Blair as the young, bedeviled Regan. “RIP William Peter Blatty, who wrote the great horror novel of our time,� Stephen King tweeted Friday. “So long, Old Bill.�

Taylor on Bevo Francis Award watch list STAFF REPORT

PELLA — Central College men’s basketball senior forward Colby Taylor, a senior from Creston, has been named to an elite list of small college basketball players on the 2017 Bevo Francis Award watch list.

Presented by Small C o l l e g e B a s ketball, t h e Bevo Francis Award is given Taylor to the player who completes the finest overall season from NCAA Division II and III schools as well as all levels of NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA competition.

A selection committee created the watch list, featuring 100 players, from an initial pool of over 1,100 schools nationwide. The committee took individual statistics, previous awards, milestones and team success into consideration when selecting the list.

The list will be narrowed down to 50 players on Feb. 15 and down to 25 players on March 15. Finalists are to be announced on April 1 with the winner released on April 3.

Panthers knock off Monarchs on road

DENISON — The Creston boys basketball squad earned a tough 56-52 road victory Saturday at Denison-Schleswig.

The Panthers rode an 18-2 run over the course of the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth to grab the lead that they held for the rest of the night.

“We had a slow start but

kept battling even though we weren’t making shots in the first half,” Creston coach Taylor Phipps said.

Kylan Smallwood scored 15 and grabbed 13 rebounds in the win.

Evan Jacobson scored 17 and dished out five assists.

Cody Crawford also had five assists to go with 12 points.

Seth Thompson hit two big treys in the win.

“That was big for him (Thompson) to hit a couple big shots and have him play

good defense,” Phipps said.

GRISWOLD — For Southwest Valley’s wrestling team, success hasn’t been easy to come by in recent seasons.

The Timberwolves put together a strong team effort throughout all five duals at Saturday’s Griswold Tournament.

Southwest Valley won all five duals to win the tournament.

The Timberwolves had four wrestlers on the all-tournament team.

Southwest Valley coach Jason Wetzel noted it was the first time in several years the team won a tournament.

The Timberwolves’ spirits were boosted by the win

Saturday.

“A win like this goes a long ways in building confidence of the team and individuals,” Wetzel said.

“These kids know they can compete with quality kids and get the wins.”

For the Timberwolves, winning Saturday is a sign of how much they have improved since Christmas.

The Timberwolves carried over the momentum from the Atlantic Tournament the week before.

“I have been very pleased with the way the guys are wrestling after the break,” Wetzel said. “We wrestled in the Atlantic Tournament last weekend and had some guys who placed fairly high.

That was the starting point a great week.”

“That’s a team that’s loaded,” Wookey said. “Everybody they bring off their bench is just as good as their guys they’ve got starting.”

Murray will face its stiffest test to date.

“We’ve got to come ready to play,” Wookey said. “It

will be a good test for us. We will be ready.”

Having the showdown in January will help the Mustangs for the key tests coming in late February.

“I’d rather have it early in the season than late,” Wookey said “It gives us a chance to see what we need to work on against good teams down the road.”

A Mustangs win would be huge for their confidence.

“If we can win that, it will be a big stepping stone for us,” Wookey said.

DIAGONAL —In front of a packed gym on Homecoming night, the Diagonal boys basketball team could not keep up with visiting Mormon Trail, falling 61-34 Friday.

The Maroons continue to cycle through their bench in ensuring that the whole roster, the youngest in the Bluegrass Conference, sees time on the court in a year where experience is a necessity for the growing squad.

“We’re trying to get our young guys experience,” Diagonal coach Matt Warren said. “I thought our young guys played well. They played hard.

That was good to see.”

Kole Paxson scored 12 points to lead the way for the Maroons.

The Maroons struggled shooting from the floor for much of the night.

Kade Klommhaus was the next leading scorer for Diagonal with six points and no other Maroon had more four.

“I don’t want to tell them not to shoot, but one pass: 3-pointer, one pass 3-pointer, is not what we’re looking for,” Warren said. “I want to be aggres-

sive driving to the hoop and if the drive isn’t there to kick out then the three.

I think that’ll come with experience.

Just trying to get more of an aggressive mentality with the young guys.”

The Maroons fell behind 17-4 early, an 11-0 Mormon Trail run, keyed by Parker Hitt, put the game out of reach early. Hitt finished with 19 points.

AFTON — East Union’s wrestlers have come out of the holiday break motivated and ready to succeed.

The hard work of the Eagles mat men was on display with an impressive effort at the East Union Dual Tournament Saturday.

The Eagles lost four contested matches over the four duals in going 4-0 as a team.

“The boys looked real good. Our conditioning was real good,” said East

Union coach Justin Staver.

East Union’s effort, even when it fell behind in matches, impressed Staver.

“I saw a lot of heart,” Staver said.

“Sherman Hayes was down 8-0 at the end of the first and even though he didn’t win it, it was 8-6. He was battling hard at the end of six minutes as he was at the first. He showed a lot of heart.

Levi Parrott showed a lot of heart. He was in there really battling, doing a good job.”

East Union’s performances have steadily improved all season.

“The boys looked the best they have all year,” Staver said. “They’re work-

ing hard in practice. Their conditioning is paying off. They’re staying in matches the whole time.”

Staver credit’s the team’s mental approach for helping them win matches.

“They’re battling the whole time,” Staver said. “Wrestling is 90 percent mental. They know they can’t give up.”

MURRAY — Murray put together a solid effort from start to finish Friday in a 7425 route of Iowa Christian in Bluegrass Conference girls basketball.

Lady Mustangs coach Jerry Shields was much more satisfied with his team’s effort Friday than he was in Thursday’s 46-27 win over East Union at Jerry Brown Gym.

Murray raced out to a 20-1 lead after the first quarter.

“We were a completely different team,” said Shields. “Coming out of the gate, we were a lot different.

The attitudes, the kids were pumped up. It was a lot better aspect to the game. We were ready to play.”

The Lady Mustangs defense took charge early.

“Our defense did a really good job,” Shields said.

The Lady Mustangs led 38-12 at halftime and 56-18 after three quarters.

Murray’s offense was crisp throughout.

“We passed the ball a lot better,” Shields said. “A lot of it was not standing around on offense. Our kids have started to move a lot more.”

Shields played all 12 regularly, with 10 reaching the scoring column.

“It was nice to get everybody in the game,” Shields said. “We got a lot of people needed playing time.”

Katie Otto led the way with a game-high 14 points,

along with six rebounds. Bre Klein had 13 points and six rebounds. Zadie Hatfield added 11 points, six assists and five steals. Ally Waske chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.

“It was very, very balanced,” Shields said.

450 new pickup truck axle-making jobs that will be moved to Michigan from Mexico, a decision made well before the presidential election campaign, the company said.

The company also confirmed that a supplier will make components for GM’s next-generation full size pickup trucks in Michigan, moving 100 supplier jobs from Mexico

to the U.S. GM emphasized that the jobs are good business decisions that have been under discussion for months or even years, but Morrissey said it was a good time to make the announcement.

“There’s no question there is an emphasis on job creation in the U.S. right now,” he said. “This is good timing for us to share what we are doing, including our ongoing commitment and track record for U.S. investments over the last

several years.”

Trump attacked GM and other automakers for building vehicles in Mexico and shipping them to the U.S. Earlier this month, he threatened on Twitter to tax GM for importing the compact Chevrolet Cruze. While GM builds hatchback Cruzes in Mexico, most Cruze sales are Ohiobuilt sedans.

On the eve of the Detroit auto show last week, GM CEO Mary Barra said the company has no plans to

change where it produces small cars in light of Trump’s threats.

Barra said the auto business has long lead times in regard to where it produces vehicles, and decisions are made two to four years ahead.

Barra, who is part of a Trump economic advisory group, said it’s too early to talk about a possible tariff. She said the company has more in common with Trump’s goals on trade and jobs than differences.

Federal authorities say the Zeta cartel has been in the state for years, especially in Cancun itself, where the Zetas were blamed for the firebombing of a bar in which eight people died in 2010.

And drug cartel influence in the state as a whole goes back at least to the 1990s under Gov. Mario Villanueva, who was later convicted in the U.S. of involvement in large-scale drug smuggling.

On Monday, officials released a list of the dead, who included one Canadian, one American, two Mexicans and one Italian.

Three were identified as part of the festival’s security team. Fifteen people suffered injuries, including at least two Canadians and two Americans.

One man who was inside the club said he hid in a storeroom with four others until the shooting stopped. He said he is a local resident and veteran of the club scene, and he agreed to speak about it only if granted anonymity because of fears for his safety.

He said that the Zetas cartel controls all drug dealing in the resort and that in the big clubs it has multiple people selling drugs, usually out of the bathrooms. He said drug dealing has become more open in recent years.

“In this area there are Zetas that control everything and that’s why everything is fine,” he said. “All the clubs here, every club here is controlled. In the toilets, everywhere, they control the drugs. They offer you drugs openly. The businessmen, the people in nightclubs, they cannot do anything. They (the Zetas) can burn your building.”

He said local officials tolerate drug dealers as long as they don’t “mess up.”

For that reason, he did not believe the Zetas were responsible for the shooting. “The Zetas didn’t do this. Otherwise they’re going to kill their own business,” he said. “If there are no clients there are no drugs.”

The Blue Parrot’s management did not immediately respond to requests for an interview.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) — Mexican authorities said Tuesday they are investigating whether extortion, street-level drug sales or a murder plot was the motive behind a shooting at an electronic music festival at a Caribbean resort town that left three foreigners and two Mexicans dead.

The attorney general of Quintana Roo state, where Playa del Carmen is located, said the gunman fired directly at one of the Mexican victims at the nightclub where the festival’s closing party was being held. A confused shootout ensued in which guards — it is not clear whether festival security personnel or the Mexican’s bodyguards — returned fire.

One guard was hit by gunfire, and as he fell, his pistol went off, wounding several concert-goers, according to state Attorney General Miguel Angel Pech. It is unclear why the Mexican man may have been a target. Pech said his family told prosecutors he had “an important relative” in the state government of Veracruz, a state plagued by corruption and violence.

The attacker fled, but Pech told the Televisa TV network that a taxi driver who helped him escape has been linked to previous extortion attempts. Some businesses in Mexico are forced to pay protection money, under threat of being attacked.

“Either they didn’t reach an agreement over protection payments, directly extortion, or it may be that somebody did not allow them to sell drugs inside” the nightclub, Pech said.

Playa del Carmen residents said the shooting came amid a growing and increasingly open drug scene in this resort town that has long been spared the violence of Mexico’s cartel wars.

Concerns that violence may be creeping into the once-tranquil beachside town just south of Cancun were voiced as people attended a Monday evening vigil in front of the Blue Parrot nightclub, where five people died and 15 were injured Monday.

“This is a sign of what has been happening,” said Lenin Amaro, a local business owner and politician.
