Creston Police K-9 Minko retired

UK’s May signals clean break with EU: No partial membership LONDON (AP) — More than six months after Britain voted to leave the European Union, British Prime Minister Theresa May finally spelled out what it means: The U.K. will make a clean break from the EU and leave its single market of around 500 million people. In her most detailed remarks since the June 23 vote, May said Tuesday that Britain must regain control of its laws and borders, even as she called on the bloc to negotiate a free-trade agreement that will benefit both sides.

Creston Police Department is now an employee short. Minko, the Creston Police K-9, was retired from his position Dec. 29 because of age and health issues. The decision to retire the police dog has been in the works for several months, when, in September, Creston Police Chief Paul Ver Meer expressed the issue to Creston City Council members at a board meeting. “He developed some arthritis in his back, and before it got too bad we wanted to let him retire

After his first handler, Creston Police Sergeant Jared Auten, needed shoulder surgery, Senior Patrolman Jayrd Merritt took over the responsibility. The first day Merritt was on duty with Minko in March 2012, he said he wondered until the dog “learned who was in charge, I figured I’d be getting bit a few times.” Now, though, Merritt’s view of the dog, who he considers people-friend-

It’s a lot of work,” Merritt said. “It’s basically having another kid, that’s the Merritt easiest way to put it.” Minko, an 8-year-old German shepherd, was a dual-purpose dog, which meant he was a patrol and drug dog. “We do not seek membership of the single market,” she said in a highly anticipated speech. “Instead, we seek the greatest possible access to it through a new, comprehensive, bold and ambitious free trade agreement.” May hopes the offer of a mutually beneficial deal is one the EU can’t refuse. She argued that a “cliff-edge for business or a threat to stability” is good for neither Europe nor Britain. “I know there are some voices calling for a punitive UK | 2A

Trump tries to calm tensions after Lewis squabble NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump spoke of national unity to a son of Martin Luther King Jr., seeking to ease friction over the president-elect’s squabble with Rep. John Lewis, a protege of the slain civil rights leader. “He said that he is going to represent all Americans. He said that over and over again,” Martin Luther King III told reporters in the lobby of Trump Tower Monday after a nearly hour-long meeting. “I believe that’s his

intent.” Trump met with King’s son on the holiday marking the life of the assassinated civil rights icon, just days after the president-elect had gone on Twitter to strike back fiercely at Lewis for questioning the legitimacy of the billionaire businessman’s election as president. Lewis and the elder King were among the Big Six civil rights leaders of the 1960s. In a post on his Twitter TRUMP | 2A
