Young organizers prep for Pumpkin Days ■ Orient’s fall festival, scheduled Friday and Saturday, is an age-old tradition with fresh leadership By IAN RICHARDSON CNA staff reporter

ORIENT — Ryan Frederick describes Pumpkin Days, Orient’s annual twoday town festival, as a “giant block party.” It’s a unique opportunity, he said, for the town of about 400 to gather as a community. “We don’t have our own football team. The basketball team, people show up for that, but they’re not on a regular night. So this is really our one big chance in the year,” he said. “Everybody comes out and we have a good time.” This year’s Pumpkin Days, which begins 5 p.m. Friday and extends through Saturday night, will be Fredrick’s eighth year on the organizing committee. And while the event itself began nearly 110 years ago, Frederick, 29, said everyone on the current organizational committee is under 35. It’s a youth infusion that has brought some fresh vigor and ideas during the past couple years. “We’ve got this younger group of us that wants to be actively involved in our community, and we want to make a positive difference,” Frederick said. “Pumpkin Days really does that.” But Pumpkin Days is also a festival steeped in tradition. The festival began in 1906 when a group of farm-

WHAT’S IN A NAME? The “Pumpkin” in Pumpkin Days comes from the phrase “pumpkin center,” another name for an agricultural hub. Pumpkin Days organizer Ryan Frederick said the town briefly changed the festival’s name to “Henry Wallace Days” in the 1990s to honor Orient-born Henry A. Wallace, the former vice president of Franklin D. Roosevelt. However, with more than 80 years of history behind its former moniker, people just couldn’t stop calling it “Pumpkin Days,” and the name sticks to this day. ers and local businessmen organized an event to thank the community for its support.
