Fire destroys Macksburg home this morning By KYLE WILSON
CNA managing editor kwilson@crestonnews.com
MACKSBURG — A fire completely destroyed a farm house in Madison County this morning. The fire started around 4:15 a.m. at the home of Tom and Lisa Bridge, 1284 310th Street in Macksburg. The couple was in bed and awoke to a smoke alarm sounding. Tom said the smoke in the bedroom was heavy and they didn’t have much time to escape. Tom climbed out the bedroom window of their
split level house and ran to a nearby shed to grab a ladder and help Lisa get to the ground safely. “They did have working smoke alarms. There is a pretty good chance the alarms saved their lives,” said Mike Swanson, fire chief in Orient. The couple only managed to get a basket of clothes, bag of medicine and a few miscellaneous items out of the house. Tom said they do have homeowners insurance. A family member had already called the insurance company this morning, and an adjuster is expected to come to the
property soon. Neighbors and family were at the residence this morning offering shelter, food and replacement items. Neither the cause of the fire nor a damage estimate were available this morning. Swanson said the fire was limited to the house and did not damage any surrounding buildings or farm ground. Tom was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Creston, Orient, Winterset and Lorimor responded to the fire. Lisa had lived in the house for more than 30 years.

When Alicia Abbott brought out the leashes, 16 dogs, tails wagging incessantly, crowded around her. They all appeared eager, but Abbott knew she couldn’t take everyone. Hoops wouldn’t behave. Teddy wouldn’t know how to go for a walk. She opt-
ed to take seven dogs, then paired them by size using couplers. “OK, who else is tall?” she asked the group. Fifteen minutes of attaching and untangling leashes passed. “Is everyone secure?” she asked. “OK, let’s go!” The clan darted out the front door, pulling Abbott behind them. The dogs tangled themselves several
times, then Winchester got loose and ran off. “They’re never this naughty!” she said. The walk ended early, and Abbott led the dogs back to her house, where they cooled off in kiddie pools filled with water and plastic balls in her backyard. Then she brought them inside to eat homemade dog treats: crunchy strips of oven-baked chick-
en coated with dog-safe seasonings.
Cedar Bark Doggie Daycare Taking care of 16 dogs is a typical Friday for Abbott, who runs Cedar Bark Doggie Daycare out of her home at 620 N. Cedar St. It is open daily, and Abbott Please see ABBOTT, Page 2
MONETA, Va. (AP) — A television reporter and cameraman were shot to death on live television Wednesday in Virginia by a gunman described as a disgruntled station employee. As the camera fell to the ground, it captured a glimpse of the shooter, who was being chased by police. Reporter Alison Parker was interviewing an economic development official about local tourism as eight shots rang out. She screamed, ran and could be heard saying “Oh my God,” as she too was shot. Adam Ward’s camera captured a fleeting image, including the face, of a man holding a handgun. The station quickly switched back to a shot of the anchor back at the station, her eyes large and jaw dropping as she said, “OK, not sure what happened there. We will of course let you know as soon as we find
out what those sounds were from.” The suspect is Vester Lee Flanagan II, 41, of Roanoke, said Becky Coyner with dispatch and records at the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office. Law enforcement personnel were in hot pursuit, with multiple vehicles following him closely down Interstate 64 at one point, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said. “They’re right behind him,” he said during an appearance on WTOPFM’s “Ask the Governor” Wednesday morning. Federal law enforcement was assisting, and federal officials said there was no indication of a connection to terrorism. The shooting happened around 6:45 a.m. at Bridgewater Plaza in Franklin Please see SHOOTING, Page 2
