More rain expected this week By JAKE WADDINGHAM

CNA associate editor jwaddingham@crestonnews.com

While southwest Iowa should get a break from the heat this week, rain showers fill the forecast through Saturday. In the Creston News Advertiser coverage area, Lorimor received just over an inch of rain Thursday and had 3.65 inches of rain Friday night into Saturday morning. The Creston airport reported 1.24 inches of rain Friday and Saturday. “We have a lot of chances coming

for more rain,” State Climatologist Harry Hillaker said. “It looks like a real good chance Thursday. It is going to be quite a wet period, although not as hot as what we have been seeing.” Hillaker said the northern half of Iowa is expected to see the heaviest rainfall totals, but the already saturated soils stretching from Greenfield and northern Union County to Osceola could cause some flash flooding. “This is quite a difference compared to the last couple months where we may have gotten some heavy rains, but they were scattered,” Hillaker said.

Two soloists will be featured, Madison Hance on flute and Kyle Jennett on saxophone. “There is an incredibly strong front line this year,” said Mike Peters, Creston High School director of bands. “I’m featuring the mallets a lot.” This line has Peters one junior, two sophomores and one freshman.

Branstad will again seek broadband legislation DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An effort to improve access to broadband Internet in rural Iowa failed in the Legislature this spring, but Gov. Terry Branstad is optimistic that a revised proposal can succeed next year. Branstad, who is running for a sixth non-consecutive term, has offered a rebooted version of his Branstad broadb a n d proposal, which he’ll pursue if re-elected. It’s dubbed “Connect Every Acre” and among the goals is to focus on farmland and to provide incentives to get broadband

First performance Creston High School Marching Band’s first field performance of the season will be at halftime of the high school’s varsity football game Friday. The band will perform the first tune of the show. Rain has kept the band from learning all of the show. “Problem was the weather, not my kid’s ability,” Peters said. Please see BAND, Page 6

infrastructure into areas with profitable agricultural operations. “We hear from farmers and manufacturers that Iowa lacks cell coverage in the fields,” Branstad said, noting that modern farming tools utilize the Internet. “This equipment today is so sophisticated. If we don’t have high speed Internet for every acre in Iowa, we’re missing out on opportunities.” Legislation seeking to expand Internet access in underserved parts of Iowa suffered a surprising defeat in the Republicanmajority state House last session. The bill was designed to entice telecommunications companies to increase broadband

These musicians are featured in the music box section of the show. “We have a very young band this year. Thirty-five to forty rookies, who have never been on the field before,” Peters said. “But there is a lot of talent, though, as a whole.” The upperclassmen are a help to the new marching members. “I’ve always had good leadership. It’s very rare not to have good leadership,” Peters said. “There’s always the younger kids waiting to step up. They’re gone (seniors), now it’s my job. That happens every year.”
