Beam me up, Sherman! spent the next four years crewing for other pilots before she purchased her first balloon in 1981. Sherman said when Linda Hartsock, former executive director of Creston Chamber of Commerce, found out she was a pilot and an artist, she asked Sherman if she was interested in the gig. “Of course I was delighted to do it,” Sherman said. “Creston is my home town. It seemed like the natural thing to do.” Sherman said she has fun designing the Balloon Days artwork. Much of her creative inspiration is drawn from friends, whose hot air balloons are often featured in her work. She also likes to put a personal touch on each Balloon Days piece she has designed.

F

or graphic artist Carol Sherman of Kansas City, Mo., Creston is where she grew her passion for art. Sherman, a Creston native who graduated from Creston High School in 1967, has been designing the annual Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days T-shirt and marketing artwork for nearly two decades and has worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for more than 40 years. Sherman, a licensed commercial hot-air balloon pilot sponsored by Medicap Pharmacy, first became fascinated with the sport in 1976 at the National Balloon Classic in Indianola. Hardcore Trekkie Sherman admits she is a “huge” Star Trek fan and the franchise has influenced many areas of her life, particularly her art. Hidden within artwork for Balloon Days, Sherman hides the USS Enterprise — the spaceship from Star Trek — and has done so for years. “It’s a little trademark thing I do,” Sherman said. Sherman said Star Trek has also inspired the names for her three balloons. Her first balloon, USS Defiant, was named after a ship featured on the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the film “Star Trek:

Schultz to run for Madison County attorney DES MOINES (AP) — Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz is a candidate for Madison County attorney in November. The county auditor’s office confirmed that Schultz is on the ballot as the Republican candidate running against current County Attorney Julie Forsyth, a Democrat. Schultz decided not to run for a second term as secretary of state. Instead he launched a campaign for Iowa’s 3rd District congressional seat but the Republican Party chose David Young from the field of six candidates in June. The Des Moines Reg- Schultz ister quotes Schultz as saying he’s had a lot of encouragement to run for county attorney. Schultz’s biography on the secretary’s website says he’s a graduate of the Law School at Creighton University and practiced law in Council Bluffs before being elected secretary of state in 2010.

Branstad, Hatch debate Thursday DES MOINES (AP) — Republican Gov. Terry Branstad presented himself as an experienced workhorse while Democratic challenger Jack Hatch pledged to bring new ideas to state government during the first debate of the Iowa governor’s race Thursday. The candidates sat before hay bales in an auditorium at the Iowa State Fair for the hour-long face-off, which was sponsored by the Iowa Public Television program “Iowa Please see DEBATE, Page 2

Bus barn construction starts By JAKE WADDINGHAM

CNA associate editor jwaddingham@crestonnews.com

Construction is underway for the Creston School District’s bus barn. “A majority of the site prep is done and the footing has been poured for the building,” said Creston High School Superintendent Steve McDermott. “The pouring of the concrete floor should happen in the near future.” He added the site also has electricity, a fire hydrant is being installed and the steel building has been ordered and should arrive in three to four weeks. The bus barn was destroyed during a tornado April 2012.

Breiholz Construction Company’s bid was for $906,000 for a base bid. The target for completion is near the Thanksgiving holiday. “We want to get it McDermott up before the snow starts to fly,” McDermott said. “It has been nice to see some progress.” McDermott said the district can afford the cost of the building and work. More than $400,000 of the construction will be paid for by insurance. The school district paid for preparations of the site, which is northeast of where the former building was located.

The district also paid for an architect to format blueprints of the building, which includes a wash bay for buses. The concrete floor is a $200,000 addition to the cost of the barn. “The insurance company is picking up a large portion of that cost because it was mandated by state fire code,” McDermott said.
