MONDAY, AUGUST 11, 2014 SUPERMOON SUNDAY: Sunday evening a supermoon — when the full moon coincides with the moon’s closest approach to the Earth during its elliptical orbit around us — could be viewed in the night sky. This photo taken by CNA reporter Larry Peterson was snapped around 12:45 a.m. this morning. Astronomers predicted this supermoon was about 31,000 miles closer to Earth than other full moons this year. Also, this supermoon is coinciding with the annual Perseid meteor shower, which peaks early this week. Astronomers say viewing of the meteor shower would be its best early Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

More than 1,000 people turned out to Stephens Auditorium for the annual Family Leadership Summit, hosted by Iowa activist Bob Vander Plaats’ family policy organization, The Family Leader. About 20 social conservative leaders spoke throughout the day-long event, interspersing political state- Santorum ments with prayer and scripture. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee — all Republicans and potential 2016 presidential contenders — were among the speakers, some splitting their time between Ames and the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. “If 2016 shapes up the way it looks like it may shape up, we are going to have a great field of conservative candidates,” Vander Plaats said.
