oday is day 29 of a coast-to-coast adventure for Jeff Moore. On Tuesday, Moore will be arriving in Creston, where he will be hosted overnight at the Creston Fire Station. Moore, 23, of Madison, Wis., is cycling more than 4,400 miles from San Francisco, Calif., to New York City to bring awareness and raise funds for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization created in 1992 in Emmitsburg, Md., to honor fallen firefighters and aid their surviving family members. The trek, which has been in the planning for less than a year, became a reality once Moore — a firefighter of four years with the town of Madison Fire Department — graduated from the University of Wisconsin in May. “Part of this is to get an idea of different areas of where I might want to live,” Moore said. “But, I think, a lot of it (inspiration) was just from being in the fire service.

I wanted to see what the fire service looked like across the country and not just in my city or county.” Moore said he wanted to use the opportunity as a way to raise funds for the families of fallen firefighters. Moore said he chose the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation because, not only do they help assist fami-

lies of fallen firefighters, but, they also provide education and training to help prevent death in the line of duty.

It is Moore’s goal to arrive at the World Trade Center site, formerly known as Ground Zero, in time for the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11. Along his transAmerican route, Moore has

been hosted by a different fire station on every stage of his route. Within the walls of each station, Moore is met with the same brotherhood that bonds his team back home and is provided meals and a warm bed each night. Moore said he enjoys the Please see TRIBUTE, Page 2

Leath to announce Veishea decision today AMES (MCT) — Iowa State University President Steven Leath will announce his final decision on the future of Veishea, the university’s annual student-run celebration, at a press conference this morning, a news release from the ISU News Service announced Wednesday afternoon. Leath will share his decision on the 2014 Veishea Task Force’s recommendations in the Memorial Union’s Campanile Room at 10:30 a.m., and will answer questions after his announcement. Creston News Advertiser will have information regarding his decision on our website at www.crestonnews.com this afternoon. Leath suspended the remainder of this year’s Veishea activities in early April after a Tuesday night disturbance in Campustown left one student seriously injured after he was hit by a toppling light pole. Police estimated the crowd to be in the 1,000s that night, and said the disturbance left at least two cars tipped over, and a number of light poles and stop signs torn from the ground. While Veishea week has seen problems in the past, including disturbances in 1988 and 2004, many people expressed surprise at trouble breaking out so early in the week this year. After suspending the rest of the week’s Veishea-sanctioned activities, Leath formed a 20-member task force charged with reviewing and evaluating the “role and relevance” of Veishea. Over a series of meetings from April to June, the task force created a number of recommendations for the future of Veishea that included having some sort of over-arching universitywide celebration in the future, but that it not be named Veishea. —————— ©2014 the Ames Tribune, Iowa Distributed by MCT Information Services
