Your input is needed. Creston Library Board has set dates for a design charrette with architect firm FEH Associates of Des Moines for Aug. 4-5 at Gibson Memorial Library. The goal of the charrette is for architects to gather input from the community for the design of a new addition and renovations to the current city library. “We’re bringing our design

team down,” said John Karrmann of FEH Associates. “We’re going to park in this (genealogy) room for a couple days. We’re going to generate a lot of ideas — like how to arrange spaces on the site to meet program needs, which direction to go with the addition, where extra parking makes sense. We are inviting the whole com-

munity to this. We need them involved.” Karrmann said the design team will begin the morning of Aug. 4. Architects will be sitting at tables drawing freehand on paper and responding to what community members are telling them they want and don’t want in the library addition. Architects will then

post the drawings on the wall in chronological order. “The community can come and go as they please over the two days,” Karrmann said. “The drawings will be pinned up on the wall. So, if they can’t make it the first day, they can look there and catch up on what’s been designed so far. We will be taking broad ideas and working them into a fine layout as the hours progress. We will have review times during lunch and early evening each day.” Karrmann said, by the end of the two days, they will work to-

ward building consensus from the community on what the final concept should be for the addition. “We will do all these drawings and will find out we didn’t get any of them right,” Karrmann said. “But, we do find out there are pieces from A and D that we can meld together in a concept we can move forward with.” Karrmann said 3D computer model images can be produced following the charrette. The News Advertiser will have more about the charrette as the event gets closer.

Heat warning issued for Midwest KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for parts of Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois. Temperatures are ex-

pected to reach into the upper 90s in some areas Monday, with heat indices soaring to 116 degrees because of high humidity. Strong storms are also forecast for parts of the Midwest and Ohio Valley.

Forecasters say there could be a strong tornado or two, along with large hail, as storms begin to form later Monday in eastern Iowa and northwestern and central Illinois.

Illinois and Indiana already have had a squall line go through Monday. Forecasters say additional storms could hit the two states, along with other parts of the Corn Belt and western Kentucky.

DES MOINES (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad should reopen two former staterun mental health centers to comply with Iowa law, according to a lawsuit announced Monday by the head of the state’s largest public employees union and 20 Democratic lawmakers. Danny Homan, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, says the lawsuit, which includes support from Democrats in the House and Senate, was filed in Polk County District Court and seeks to compel Branstad’s administration to reopen the centers in Clarinda and Mount Pleasant. The lawsuit claims the closings were illegal because Iowa law requires the state to operate them. “No one is above the law. That includes the governor. We are filing this lawsuit to hold him accountable for breaking the law,” Homan said in a statement.

Branstad spokesman Jimmy Centers responded by reiterating the governor’s stance that the centers were not suited to offer Branstad modern mental health care. “Mr. Homan and AFSCME may be resistant to change that improves Iowans’ health and eager to sue on behalf of their members to protect the status quo, but Gov. Branstad will continue putting patients first and working to improve care, increase access and modernize our state’s delivery of services,” he said in a written statement. The suit also names Charles Palmer, the director of the state Department of Human Services. A Please see LAWSUIT, Page 2A
