UPDATE
Lincoln School rental project to begin in 30-45 days By KYLE WILSON
CNA managing editor kwilson@crestonnews.com
It won’t be long. Mike Fallesen, vice president with Seldin Company of Omaha, Neb., said Thursday that construction at Lincoln School in Creston is set to begin in 30 to 45 days. The development company purchased the Lincoln School property from the
city for $10,000 in August 2014. They plan to transform the old school building into 16 rental housing units and construct 11 town homes on the green space between the school and Adams Street. “We’re still working due diligence with our investors,” Fallesen said. “The community can expect to see activity on the site in the next 45 days.”
Fallesen said Ask Studio of Des Moines is the architectural firm hired for this project and Koester Construction of G r i m e s Fallesen will be the general contractor. Stage 1 of this project
will be demolition inside the school building, dirt work preparations for town homes and running of utilities. Stage 2 will be envelope improvements including making roof repairs, tuck pointing to brick work and installing new windows. “We want to weatherize the building to protect all the improvements we will be making on the inside,” Fallesen said.

In all, more than $5 million in improvements are expected at the Lincoln School property. Fallesen expects construction to take almost one full year with a completion date predicted for July 1, 2016. The need for housing, specifically rentals, is well documented in Creston. The 16 rental units inside the school would be a combination of one and
two bedroom apartments. An adequate commons and fitness area is also planned inside the school. The 11 town homes will be a combination of threeand four-bedrooms. Those units will be two-story rentals with about 1,200 square feet. A groundbreaking for this project will be held in Creston. No date has been set yet for that event.
IDNR: Green Valley Lake microcystin levels high The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has identified a hepatotoxin called microcystin toxin in Green Valley Lake near Creston in Union County. Amanda Husband, Union County environmental specialist, said people and pets should not swim or wade in the water while t h e s e Husband l e v e l s are high. She said fishing and boating at speeds low enough to not kick up much spray, however, are safe. “No swimming, no direct water contact is what I would advise people,” Husband said. “If you’re boating and you’re not splashing a bunch of water up on to yourself ... just out trolling around, that’s not a problem.” Microcystin toxin is released by blue-green algae or cyanobacteria. Cyanobacterial blooms can form in
warm, slow-moving waters that are rich in nutrients. They most often occur in late summer or early fall. Both humans and animals can get microcystin poisoning from exposure to contaminated water, either by intentionally or accidentally swallowing water, by having direct skin contact (as when swimming, wading, or showering) or by breathing airborne droplets containing microcystins during boating or waterskiing. Microcystin poisoning cannot be spread from one person to another, nor from an animal to a person. Symptoms of microcystin exposure or poisoning include: • rash, hives or skin blisters (especially on the lips and under swimsuits) • gastrointestinal symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, severe headaches and fever • runny eyes and nose, Please see GREEN VALLEY, Page 2A
