NODAWAY — Two men have been charged with first-degree murder in the ongoing investigation of the homicide of Allen Pafford, 44, who was found dead in his bedroom June 20 in Nodaway. According to an Iowa Department of Public Safety report released Monday, Jon

Rubendall, 41, and James Bost, 39, both currently residing in Hiawatha, K a n . , have been charged w i t h first-degree murder. Rubendall According to an Adams County Sheriff report, Pafford’s mother, Kathryn Pafford,

found her son and called 911 at approximately 11:19 a.m. June 20. T h e report states Pafford was found on his knees, slouched over, with Bost his head on the floor. A bed sheet was wrapped around his neck and head, and his hands were

bound with a blue nylon strap similar in nature to a truck or trailer ratchet tie-down. His feet were bound with a nylon rope that was connected to the blue strap. There appeared to be a bullet wound to the back of his head, according to the report. Investigators located a fired 9mm cartridge casing and a bullet that appeared to have come from a HiPoint handgun. The bullet and shell casing were found

next to Pafford’s body. A June 22 autopsy performed by the associate state medical examiner ruled Pafford’s death a homicide. Agents from the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) traveled to Hiawatha, Kan., Friday to interview witnesses and persons of interest, including Bost and Rubendall. During the interview,

Bost said Pafford owed Rubendall $3,000 for drugs. Several items of Pafford’s were found in Rubendall’s residence. According to the Iowa DPS report, the investigation is ongoing. Both Rubendall and Bost were being held in Brown County Jail in Hiawatha on $1 million bond. To read the full report document, visit www.crestonnews.com.

Christie says he’s running in 2016 to ‘change the world’ The Republican governor is set to kick off his campaign this morning in Livingston, N.J. ■

LIVINGSTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie prepared Tuesday to launch his 2016 campaign for president, telling his most loyal sup- Christie porters that he’s ready to begin what he called a “noble” effort to “lead our country and to change the world.” The Republican governor is set to kick off his campaign this morning in the gymnasium of his old high school in the town of

Livingston, New Jersey, where he experienced some of his first political victories in student politics. “The idea of going back to where you were when you were 15, or 16, or 17 years old, and to be able to stand in front of that group of people and offer yourself to the presidency is a really, really amazing moment,” Christie said in a private call with donors, friends and out-of-state supporters a few hours before his official announcement. Christie called on them to “to have confidence” going forward. He said he was “ready to go” and excited “to begin what I hope

is going to be a really noble and successful effort to try to lead our country and to change the world.” Christie is aiming to reintroduce himself to a national audience that has seen him fade from favor among Republicans and then try to climb back. Four years ago, some of Christie’s backers tried to persuade him to challenge President Barack Obama. In the years since, he won re-election with ease, but also struggled to revive the state’s moribund economy and fought with the state’s Democratic-controlled legislature over pensions and the state budget. While Christie’s turn as head of the Republican Governors Association was widely viewed as a success in the 2014 midterm elec-

tions, he’s also faced the fallout from the actions of three former aides, charged with creating politically motivated traffic jams to retaliate against a Democratic mayor who declined to endorse Christie’s re-election. The governor faces a tough sell with many conservatives, but has seemingly found his stride at times in visits to early voting states with the lively town hall meetings he’s known for at home. In articulating his vision for the country, Christie plans to draw heavily on his upbringing and his time in Livingston, a town about 20 miles west of New York City. AFTON — Lance Ridgely, former curriculum director at Clarke Community Schools and former superintendent at Westwood Ridgely Community Schools in Sloan, will take over as superintendent at East Union Schools in Afton Wednesday. Ridgely recently dropped by the Creston News Advertiser to answer some questions about himself, his family and his plans for his first 90 days at EU. CNA: Tell me a little bit more about your family. You’ve adopted three of your boys? LR: We adopted three sons. They’re all from the same family. We weren’t ready to be done parenting, and one of the boys was in my wife’s classroom for a year, so we got to know

him a little bit and we knew there were other brothers involved. We knew them through our church, got involved with KidsNet here in Iowa, and took the classes and everything flowed. Adoption day was May 29 of last year. They had moved in during October 2013 with us. CNA: What was it about East Union that made you want to apply for the superintendent job? LR: The area is very important. We’ve made a commitment that our kids will grow up and live in Earlham, and they’re going to stay with their core group of friends. So for me to be around and be visible in part of their lives as they grow up, I needed to be able to do it in a place that you can get to in a reasonable amount of time, so that was one of the things we looked at. But really, what drew me to the application process was talking to Dr. Vogel last fall. We’re in a couple workshops together, and I Please see RIDGELY, Page 2A
