NODAWAY — The death of Allen Pafford, 44, Saturday in Nodaway has been ruled a homicide. According to an Iowa Department of Public Safety report, at approximately 11:20 a.m. on Saturday June 20, 2015, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from Kathy Pafford at 703 4th St. in Nodaway. Pafford advised that her son, Allen Pafford, 44, was deceased. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office responded and located Pafford on the property. An old adage states that Iowa’s corn crop needs to be knee high by the Fourth of July in order for farmers to have a successful crop. There is a good chance area farmers will get their boots wet if they venture out to check corn height anytime soon. While Iowa was able to plant a majority of the corn crop for 2015, a significant portion of the soybeans have not been planted because of wet field conditions. As of June 7, the University of Illinois Ag Economist John Newton estimated 1.9 million unplanted corn acres and more than 18 million unplanted soybean acres nationwide. “There are going to be acres in U n i o n , Saeugling Adair, Adams, Ringgold and Taylor counties that simply won’t get planted this year,” said Aaron Saeugling, extension field agronomist for 14 counties in southwest Iowa. Iowa ranked third in unplanted soybean acres with approximately 1.2 million acres. “I would say our soybean yields are going to be impacted,” Saeugling said. “Corn is looking average. The challenge we have faced is stand degeneration. It has been so wet and the stands on the side hills have thinned themselves or have rotted in standing water.” May was the wettest month on record for the United States with precipi-

tation levels exceeding 500 percent of average rainfall in Texas and Oklahoma. Across the Midwest, rainfall totals were 200 to 300 percent above average. The National Weather Service extended summer forecast predicts below normal temperatures and above average rainfall for Iowa. Kayla Creek, National Resource and Conservation Service district conservationist for Union County, said the wet conditions could lead to a shallow root system for area farmers corn crops.

“When the crop is constantly getting moisture to the root system, it hasn’t been forced to go down deeper into the soil to find that moisture,” Creek said. “If the water just turns off all of a sudden, you could expose yourself to shallow root problems.” Corn with shallow roots is more susceptible to wind damage or being knocked over by heavy ears. This could complicate and slow down the fall harvest.

States Department of Agriculture report June 30 that will outline prevented planting estimates for corn and soybeans. Saeugling said farmers typically have two options when it comes to prevented planting. If they have insurance, the crop insurance company will dictate whether or not the acres can be planted. “The insurance is paying them for lost income,” Saeugling said. “If they plant, Please see CONDITIONS, Page 2A
