After being in recovery mode for most of the week, the Elm’s Club in Creston will reopen 10:30 a.m. Friday. The bar and grill has been closed since a dryer fire in the early hours of Mon-
day morning caused nearly $20,000 in smoke damage to the building. Gus King, Elm’s Club co-owner, said it was discovered by an employee who came in early. “She usually comes in at 5 or 6,” King said. “That day she went on a bike ride and didn’t get home until midnight and came up about 1:15 to clean.” A deep cleaning crew from Des Moines came in Wednesday to begin scrubbing walls and will continue
work today. King said the cleaning will begin in the basement Friday, but the main area will be ready for business. “We’re doing the best we can,” he said. “There’s going to be a little smell. It ain’t bad, but the back entryway is where it’s bad.” King said although the ex-
perience has been taxing, he is pleased with how quickly the cleanup process has gone. “For the most part, it just wears on you,” he said, “but other than that, nobody got hurt. That’s the main thing.” King said the Elm’s Club’s June 26 Bike Night will go on as planned.

The race for the GOP presidential nomination passed through Creston Wednesday with one of the major candidates, Mike Huckabee, spending time with potential caucus voters. This will be Huckabee’s second run for the Republican presidential nomination. The former Arkansas governor won eight states in 2008, but did not have the resources to defeat eventual nominee John McCain. Huckabee, 59, elected to skip the Iowa straw poll this year and focus on executing a successful campaign to repeat his 2008 victory in the Iowa caucus. His focus will be reaching out to voters on a personal level with events similar to his southwest Iowa tour Wednesday that included stops in Clarinda, Red Oak and Creston. “Doing events like what we did here today in Creston … meeting caucus voters one to one time and again and being here a lot — I don’t think there is any substitute for that — so

we will spend a lot of time in Iowa, answer a lot of questions,” Huckabee said. “I think I have answered more questions in one day than Hillary (Clinton) has answered in two months.” During Huckabee’s stop at Adams Street Espresso he highlighted his time as governor in Arkansas, emphasized his support of the fair tax and expressed his
strong Christian values. “His sense of values came shining through with his answers,” said Union County Republican Chairperson Joe Owens. “He understands government, he understands what our nation is facing and he has a sound idea of how to get it fixed ... He knows Iowa values, he knows what we believe in and he knows
that we vote.” Since his last campaign, Huckabee became wellknown to conservatives for his show on Fox News, authored several books and has been a popular draw as a speaker for fellow Republican candidates. “It has been, to me, very Please see HUCKABEE, Page 2A
WASHINGTON (AP) — Alexander Hamilton, who has been featured on the $10 bill since 1929, is making way for a woman. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew is to officially announce Thursday that a redesign of the $10 will feature the first woman on the nation’s paper money in more than a century. The plan is to decide which woman sometime this summer. The bill will have new security features to make it harder to counterfeit and will be unveiled in 2020, the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. The date it will be put into cir-
culation will be announced later. Lew is asking the public for suggestions on who should be chosen for the bill, as well as what symbols of democracy it should feature. Ideas can be submitted by visiting thenew10. treasury.gov website. Various groups have been campaigning to get a woman honored on the nation’s paper currency, which has been an all-male domain for more than a century. The last woman featured on U.S. paper money was Martha Washington, who was on a dollar silver certificate from 1891 to 1896. The only other woman ever featured on U.S. paper money was Pocahontas, from 1865 to 1869. Susan B. Anthony and Sacagawea are on dollar coins. A grass roots group, Please see TREASURY, Page 2A
