When the management team of Iowa State Savings Bank (ISSB) learned that a group of local volunteers was working to expand educational resources for area families, they saw an opportunity to provide assistance. The volunteers formed The Learning Center of Southwest Iowa (TLC) and began providing services during the 2013-2014 school year. The non-profit organization provides children who learn differently with the supplemental screening and tutoring services and support needed to achieve academic success. Karl Knock, ISSB CEO and chairman, knew the opportunity for the bank to provide assistance to the organization had arrived when TLC volunteers Su-

Rural residents in Union County will soon have the option to test their well water for arsenic for free with new funding through Grants to Counties starting July 1. The county already offers free testing for bacteria, E. coli and nitrate levels. “Arsenic is a cancer-causing agent,” said Amanda Husband, Union County environmental specialist. “There are no state laws that govern the quality of your well water. We will guide them in the direction of the best health decision. We hope Husband they will then follow some of our recommendations.” According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, arsenic occurs naturally in rocks and soil, water, air, and plants and animals. It can be further released into the environment through natural activities such as volcanic action, erosion of rocks and forest fires or through human actions. “Anyone who has a well they are using for drinking water should have their well tested yearly,” Husband said. “Arsenic does not need a yearly test, but bacteria, E. coli and nitrate levels Please see ARSENIC, Page 2A
