Dennis Kuyper, middle, prepares to place a red cord around the neck of TJ Patterson while Jerry Hartman hands him his award for participating in the school’s American Red Cross blood drives. Patterson was one of many students receiving a red cord Friday during the CHS awards ceremony. To receive a red cord, students must donate blood three times, volunteer for eight hours for the Red Cross or enlist five others to give blood during the course of their high school years. The blood drives at Creston High School are organized each year by Kuyper and Hartman.

Osceola Hy-Vee has been upgraded. After many months of construction at the store, a ribbon cutting was held May 1 to showcase the business’ new amenities. “In the end, we get a brand new modern facility that rivals anything that you see up in the metro areas, on a smaller scale, obviously,” said Osceola store director Lonnie Smith. Smith said it was a long winter for both customers and employees with constant construction going on throughout the business. “With the bridges over and trenches in the store, all the noise, dirt, dust and cleaning every day, working around all that. So, these guys deserve all the credit,” Smith said. “They worked hard and their people worked hard. Taking care of customers through all of what they were having to deal with is testament to how good these guys really are.” What’s new? This is a list of Osceola Hy-Vee’s new amenities • In-store pharmacy • Market Café with full-service restaurant and bar • Chinese Express • Expanded produce, wine and spirits • Expanded selections in meat and dairy • Huge bulk foods section • Health market section Osceola Hy-Vee is just one more reason for people to shop locally. “We’ve had a ton of people say, ‘I used to shop in West Des Moines because I can’t get this, but now I can get it here. I used to go to Mills Civic Hy-Vee because they have so many bulk foods, but now I don’t have to do that because I can shop at our local store,’” Smith said. “They’re super excited about having all those things in our town.”

Leith, vice president and agent at Tyler Insurance, helped form the weekly cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification classes in April, as well as raise funds for automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, for Pay It Forward week. “It was amazing. We actually got over 100 people trained in the month of April,” Leith said. “That’s in great thanks to the
