Trumpeter swans to be released May 6 at Summit Lake Four trumpeter swans will be released on Summit Lake at the boat ramp on the south side of Highway 25, one mile west of Creston, at 1 p.m. May 6. The release is open to the public and includes a 20-minute swan/wetland presentation, a unique opportunity to touch and view the swans up close, and a historic photo opportunity with the kids. As the largest North American wa-

terfowl, these magnificent all-white birds can weigh up to 32 pounds with an 8-foot wingspan. Trumpeter swans were once common in Iowa, but were gone from the state by the late 1880s. By the early 1930s, only 69 trumpeter swans remained in the lower 48 states. The trumpeter swans being released are part of the DNR’s statewide trumpeter swan restoration effort, with hopes that they will help restore a wild free flying population to Iowa.

In 2014, Iowa DNR Wildlife Technician Dave Hoffman released four trumpeter swans — two males and two females — at Summit Lake. The program has released 1,132 swans that have been reported in 17 states as far west as Colorado and as far east as Virginia. All of the birds have metal bands on their leg to signify they were released by the Iowa DNR. One swan in each release is given a bright red collar to give Hoffman and the DNR a sample population on how the trumpeter swans that are released are surviving, migrating and eventually mating. — CNA file photo

AFTON — With a search team now in place, East Union’s hunt for a new superintendent is about to begin. The EU Board of Directors unanimously voted to give the two-person search team Leadership Associates the job Wednesday night after hearing presentations by it and McPherson & Jacobson, the 24-year-old firm the school used seven years ago to find current superintendent Pam Vogel. This will be Leade r s h i p Vogel Associates’ first superintendent search. Both firms presented and fielded questions for 45 minutes apiece Wednesday. After the firms left, the board compared the two and unanimously voted for Leadership Associates. Both teams projected a $5,000 price tag for basic services. Both also suggested a 60-day timeline from start to finish. Despite the comparative services, board president Brett Weis said the board seemed to feel more

Associates has not officially taken on a superintendent search, the team, comprised of current administrators Jim Verlengia and Becky Durand, brings over seven decades of administrative experience to the table. Verlengia is former superintendent of Lewis Central and current superintendent at Colo-Nesco. He also works with Heartland Area Education Agency 11. Verlengia has consulted with several school boards in the past, including Ogden, Boone, West Central Valley, Urbandale and East Union. Colo-Nesco and East Union both have an enrollment of approximately 520. Durand has 30 years education experience — 10 with elementary and 20 as central adminsitrator. She currently works in the Bondurant-Farrar school district. Verlengia said that the lack of experience in superintendent searches makes the duo determined to get East Union’s search right. “We understand the risk that you would be placing in us,” Verlengia said. “This is an important time. If we have to have a first that we can come back and list you as a reference, we’d like it to be you. So there is a dedication and Please see SEARCH, Page 2A
