AMES (MCT) — Iowa State University says five departmental storage servers containing the Social Security numbers of thousands of students has been hacked. Officials at ISU made the announcement Tuesday, saying there is no evidence any data files were accessed. The servers contained Social Security numbers of 29,780 students enrolled at ISU between 1995 and 2012, according to a news release issued Tuesday. Officials say there was no student financial information in the records. “We don’t believe our students’ n The servpersonal informaers contained tion was a target in Social Security this incident, but it was exposed,” Senumbers of nior Vice President 29,780 students and Provost Jonaenrolled at ISU than Wickert said in the news release. between 1995 The Social Secuand 2012. rity numbers that were exposed were of students who took a class in computer science between 1995 and 2005, world languages and cultures in 2004, 2007 or from 2011 to 2012, or materials science and engineering in 2001. Two other servers, one located in agricultural and biosystems engineering and the other in materials science and engineering, were accessed, but didn’t contain any personal information, the press release said. The university mailed letters Tuesday to all the people whose Social Security numbers were on the compromised servers, as well as to 18,949 students whose university ID numbers were on the same servers. University IDs don’t have any use outside campus. University officials have notified law enforcement of the security breach, and are providing a year of free credit monitoring for all the people whose Social Security numbers were exposed, according to the press release. “Iowa State has always taken information security very seriously, and we will continue to take every possible action to safeguard the personal information of those who learn and

Half as long, but just as good. Creston High School students have put together oneact plays for Friday. The plays, which last between 30 and 45 minutes, are directed by seniors Kim Alley, Ben Mullin, Liam Ray and Annette Reasoner. Actors are made up of 28 freshmen and sophomores. Mullin and Ray’s play is called “Bank Robbery,” and Alley and Reasoner’s play is “How I Learned to Stop Being Afraid of My Gym Teacher.” “Everybody likes the one acts because they’re fun,” Alley said. “They’re usually comedy.” There will be five freshmen and sophomores acting in Mullin and Ray’s play, and 23 students acting in Alley and Reasoner’s play. The students take advantage of this opportunity because it allows them another chance to be active in

The students will put on the plays twice. The first performance will be during the school day Friday for Creston Elementary and Middle school students. The second performace, which is open to the community, is 7 p.m. Friday at Creston High School

auditorium. Cost is $3 for students and senior citizens, and $5 for adults. “It has always been a fun thing to put together our own play,” Mullin said. “It’s been a really great experience and we have a really great cast, so this will be a good performance.”

Grassley concerned about ISU fraud U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, continues to press for answers about the handling of fraudulent AIDS vaccine research conducted by a former Iowa State University scientist. The scientist, Dong Pyou Han, falsified research that helped secure millions of dollars in federal grants by contaminating rabbit blood with human antibodies, mak-

ing it appear to show promise in neutralizing strains of the HIV virus. Han subsequently resigned and was slapped with a three-year federal research ban from the HHS Office of Research Integrity (ORI), but the grant money has not been returned. On Monday, Grassley sent a letter to Kathleen Sebelius, the departing secretary of the Department of Health and

Human Services (HHS), urging her to respond to a series of eight questions related to “problematic policies in your department” that he believes may have contributed to the grant money not being recovered. “Specifically, it appears that bureaucratic red tape is keeping ORI from being more effective at its mission,” Grassley wrote.
