McKinley Park will be glowing Saturday evening as 470 brightly-colored runners and walkers are expected for the inaugural Hope Glows 5K run. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. It is First National Bank’s fundraiser to benefit Relay for Life and American Cancer Society. “Our goal for the first year was 150 participants,” said coorganizer Chantel Klejch, personal banker at FNB. “But, we realized after early bird registration we were going to exceed that goal and that we would need to find a lot more volunteers.” Klejch said registration is still open for this event online by visiting www.fnbcreston.com. You can also registered in person at both FNB locations in Creston. The registration fee is $25. The fee includes a T-shirt in

your choice of six glowing colors and glow swag. “If you registered this week, though, you won’t get your Tshirt until after race day. We had to order more,” Klejch said. Runners can pick up their registration packets 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at First National Bank on 801 W. Taylor Street in Creston. Packets will also be available before the race at 6:30 p.m. on the west side of McKinley Park at the large shelter house. The event will take place rain or shine. Fireworks shot off by Creston Shooters will start the race at 7:30 p.m. There will be prizes for “best glowers” and top three finishers. First place in both categories (best glower and finisher) will receive an iPod Shuffle. Second and third places will receive a decorative Hope Glows boulder donated by Winterstien Construction. Brats, bananas and water will be provided by Hy-Vee following the race. Music entertainment will be provided by Double T’s Djn during and after the race. All registration fees are nonrefundable and will be donated to Relay for Life. For questions or more information, contact FNB at 641-782-2195.

One injured as thousands create disturbance near ISU campus AMES (MCT) — What police say was thousands of people converged on Campustown late Tuesday night creating a disturbance, pulling down light poles, tipping over cars and strewing trash and beer cans throughout the streets. One person was injured when they were hit by a light pole as it fell to the ground, police said. Ames police Cmdr. Geoff Huff says it’s believed the disturbance began about 11:30 p.m. near Stanton and Welch avenues when two groups converged near the clocktower on Welch Avenue. Huff said police didn’t know the exact number of people involved but estimated it was in the thousands. The violence coincides with the annual Veishea week celebration on the Iowa State University Campus. Increased vandalism and alcohol-related crimes are commonplace for the week-long celebration but such disturbances involving large crowds are unusual for early in the week. Huff said that an escalated disturbance happened early in the week doesn’t bode well for the rest of the week and the upcoming weekend, when larger numbers of people, many from out of town, converge on Ames. He said he hopes cooler heads prevail. He said it appeared that Tuesday night’s disturbance was quelled and the crowd began to disperse after the individual was hit by the falling light pole. The person was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Their condition wasn’t immediately known. Safety has long been a prominent question surrounding Veishea, particularly following riots during Veishea weekend in 1988 and 2004. Then-president Gregory Geoffroy canceled the 2005 event, and it resumed in 2006. A fight in 2009 caused police to close Campustown businesses and clear people from the district. During Veishea weekend 2012, a 21-year-old Cedar Rapids man died after falling from a fourth-floor balcony on Chamberlain Street. —————— ©2014 the Ames Tribune, Iowa Distributed by MCT Information Services
