As the 2014 legislative session comes to a close later this month, Rep. Jack Drake discussed several topics with Crestonians that are coming to the forefront in the Iowa House during Saturday morning’s last legislative coffee for 2014 at the restored depot. Drake said passing the budget is still the main focus for ev-

eryone in the Iowa House and Senate. Drake, who serves on the agriculture standing committee, gave a preview to some of the changes in this year’s budget. “We are taking about $3 million out of the REAP program for soil conservation, forest management ... and for park upkeep,” Drake said. REAP stands for Resource Enhancement and Protect. It includes programs and funding through the state to enhance

and protect Iowa’s diverse natural and cultural resources. About $1 million of the $3 million reassigned from REAP is designated for soil conservation to help with nutrient reduction. Drake said the funds will go toward building new terraces to help protect Iowa’s water. He added he is also researching how to help urban areas

Several Crestonians to take ‘Plunge for Landon’ today Hundreds of people across the Creston News Advertiser coverage area splashed into a chilly lake or pool over the weekend to help raise funds for a 5-month-old boy named Landon Shaw from Tarkio, Mo. who has cancer. The Creston wrestling team took the “Plunge for Landon” Saturday. Southwestern Community College softball team and Creston girls basketball teams will be plunging today. The News Advertiser will be at Green Valley Lake beach starting around 5:30 p.m. today to take pictures of those taking the plunge. After pictures, a few of us will be taking the plunge, too. This event calls on people to take a video of yourself taking a polar plunge, then challenge friends and family to take the plunge. If they meet the challenge, donations for each person can be sent to the Shaw family’s donation fund: Landon Shaw, Flower Mill, 606 Main Street Tarkio, Mo, 64491. Tarkio is located 93 miles southwest of Creston, just south of Shenandoah.
