Creston:Arts to host three-week art camp By SARAH BROWN

CNA staff reporter sbrown@crestonnews.com

When Creston:Arts members decided to start a summer art program, organizers wanted the program to enhance the skills young artists, but also attract children who might not think of themselves as artists. “One of our main goals is inclusivity,” said Brian Zachary, secretary of Creston:Arts Council. “We’re a place for kids that don’t feel like they fit

into other activities.” Zachary said one of the main goals of the program is to broaden how people view art. “We want to really teach that art is where you find it,” said Zachary. “A lot of us have these grand ideas about what art is and think we can’t afford the supplies, but, the materials are all around you. There are a lot of materials for free or cheap you can do most of your work with.” Zachary said the art projects at art camp will teach kids about recycling

and upcycling. “It’s good for the environment,” Zachary said. “Anything we keep out of the landfill is really important.” The lineup Creston:Arts camp will offer two full weeks and a third week of individual workshops; June 9 to 13, 16 to 20 and 23 to 27. As the enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act for 2014 draws to a close March 31, the Obama Administration is preparing for a surge of signups through the weekend. Under the Affordable Care Act — more commonly known by its nickname Obamacare — Americans who are not signed up for health insurance for more than three months are subject to a tax penalty. Visiting Nurse Services of Iowa ACA Navigator Dara Rasavanh said all of their enrollment events are booked through March 31, but encouraged individuals to set up their initial profile. Officials said the government will not try to determine if someone who checked the blue box actually needed assistance signing up for health care or if it was just a way to extend the deadline. Visiting Nurse Services of Iowa has two full-time website navigators and five part-time workers setting up face-to-face appointments to help people sign up for health care. According to White House officials Monday, more than 1.1 million people visited HealthCare.gov, the website’s second largest traffic day. “The website was doing well until about two weeks ago (because of the heavy traffic),” Rasavanh said. “It could take up to 15 minutes before the screen comes back on. onna, Mike and Gus King — owners of the Elm’s Club in Creston — celebrated earlier this week when their establishment was again named a top 10 finalist for Iowa’s Best Burger contest. One hundred and seven miles away, an Orient-Macksburg graduate was celebrating, too. Jason Mikkelsen — a 1996 graduate of O-M — opened Brick City

Grill at 2704 Stange Road in Ames less than one year ago. His up-andcoming bar and grill was also named a finalist in the contest. “We are beyond excited,” Mikkelsen said. “The restaurant business is not an easy one, so a contest like this really helps generate interest. We’ve already had customers come in and tell us they read about us on Facebook, in the paper or on the news.” Like Elm’s Club, Mikkelsen said his signature burgers are fresh, never frozen patties. “I mean fresh,” Mikkelsen said. “I place my order at 11 a.m. in the morning and the beef is not even ground up at that time yet. We get the beef the next morning around 6 a.m. and then begin preparing fresh patties by hand.” Mikkelsen is the son of Rita and Reg Mikkelsen of rural Creston. “We’re really happy for him,” Rita said. “He’s worked really hard to have

a restaurant of his own. We get up there as often as we can. My favorite is the pretzel burger.” Hours at Brick City Grill in Ames are 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday Mikkelsen through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Mikkelsen said he doesn’t recall ever having a burger from the Elm’s Club, but he does plan to next time he’s back in southwest Iowa for the holidays. Who will win? This is the fifth year for this best burger contest put on by Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. Starting this Please see BRICK CITY, Page 2
