Mount Ayr receives $700K scholarship endowment By KELSEY HAUGEN CNA staff reporter khaugen@crestonnews.com

MOUNT AYR – This year, Mount Ayr Community School has a new $700,000 scholarship endowment for seniors, thanks to a Benton native who left the money to the school when she passed away in 2014. “We have 19 kids that applied for this scholarship,” said John Larsen, Mount Ayr middle/high s c h o o l Larsen guidance counselor. “There is a total of $31,000 that will be

awarded this year, and the recipients are yet to be determined.” Not long after Viona Vaughn Snyder’s obituary was published, a letter was sent to Mount Ayr Community School stating Vaughn Snyder had left the $700,000 endowment. “Nobody really saw this one coming, and it’s going to be a huge shot in the arm for the educational needs of our seniors,” Larsen said. “(Vaughn Snyder) was originally from Ringgold County and I think just felt she wanted to give something back and evidently had a strong interest in giving back to education.” The endowment is administered through Wells Fargo Wealth Management/Philanthropic Services.

Similar to other scholarships the school offers, the Vaughn Snyder endowment is set up so that the principal, $700,000, is never actually touched. Instead, the amount of scholarship money awarded each year is based on the interest the principal accrues. “The better the markets do, the more money we get; the worse the markets do, the less money we get,” Larsen said. “We won’t award money unless its current value exceeds its historical value, so it’s possible at some point it could dip below the original amount that was put in the endowment, and in that case, we would award no money.” This year, the interest for the Vaughn Snyder endowment is $31,000, so that is

the amount to be awarded this year. “It’s a wonderful scholarship, and it will allow a lot of opportunities for our students,” said Lynne Wallace, Mount Ayr middle/ high school principal. “The dividend of $31,000 will go a long ways with our seniors.” With 19 senior applicants this year, it is possible every applicant will get a portion of the $31,000. However, it is also possible to give the entire $31,000 to one student. It is up to the Mount Ayr scholarship committee to decide how many students earn scholarships and how much each scholarship is worth. There are a few require$700K | 2A

Also up for re-election are Hysell and Union County Sheriff Rick Piel. “Anybody who’s interested in running for these seats can come up to the auditor’s office, and we can give them the nomination papers and let them know how many signatures they will need,” Hysell said.
