written the comedy sketches for Frank Caliendo at the NFL on FOX and ESPN Countdown pregame shows. Long has also been on NBC and “The Bob and Tom Show.” “I’m interactive with the audience, and I consider the audience my co-stars,” Long said. “My shows are kind of a circus.” The park and rec board selected Long because he’s from Iowa but is a national act. “We were trying to get the best act we could get,” said John Kawa, chairman of the park and rec board. “He’s a big-time comedian, so I’m sure he’ll be the best show we’ve ever had.” The event is also a fundraiser for the park and rec board. The auction will feature a number of items, including a dinner deal at McKinley Park; swimming pool pass; baskets from local businesses like Iowa State Savings Bank and Carter Agency; processed halfhogs; bar crawl gift certificates; and possibly skybox tickets to an Iowa Cubs game in Des Moines.

Growing up in the “cornstalk ghetto of Iowa” in Newton and Altoona, comedian Scott Long found therapy in the midst of a dysfunctional childhood by making others laugh. “A subtitle of my show is ‘Tales from the cornstalk ghetto.’ I grew up the grandson of a farmer and the son of factory worker, and I tell a lot of stories of my dysfunctional childhood,” Long said. “My show could only come from someone who grew up in Iowa.” Long will be the featured performer at the Creston Park and Recreation Board’s sixth-annual night of comedy 5 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Eagles Lodge, 300 E. Montgomery St., in Creston. Tickets are $30 and include a smoked prime rib dinner. Tickets may be purchased at Eagles Lodge, Sidetracked and the Creston News Advertiser, by calling 641-782-2000 ext. 2 or at the door. The evening will begin with a social hour from 5 to 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner, a live auction by West & Frey Auctioneers and Long’s stand-up comedy. “We went through some online entertainment agencies and picked him out,” said Chris Lane with Carter Agency Inc. “He’s an Iowa guy, and his act has an Iowa side to it, even though he does national touring.” Long, who now lives in Indianapolis, tours nationally and, for nearly 15 years, has

Several Iowa politicians were available for comments during the February legislative coffee Saturday morning at the restored Creston Depot. U.S. Congressman David Young (R-Iowa), Iowa Sen. Tom Shipley (R-Iowa) and Iowa Rep. Tom Moore (R-Iowa) attended the coffee to discuss questions local citizens had about state and federal government and their goings-on. The most discussed topics were about big govern-

An issue politicians talked about at length was how the federal and state executive branches have managed to pass rules and regulations when that job was designated to the legislative branch of government. “One of the complaints that I hear is that our government has grown too big. I think that the framework of both of the constitutions had envisioned that the legislative body at each (state and federal) level would be responsible for passing all the laws and the executive COFFEE | 2A
