City council to view Sonntag condos in March By KYLE WILSON

CNA managing editor kwilson@crestonnews.com

Winter weather has forced the American Red Cross to cancel more than 1,000 blood drives since Jan. 1

A bus tour to Atlantic to see condominiums built by private developer Don Sonntag has been tentatively scheduled for March 8. Mike Taylor, city administrator, said in March a mix of both interested Creston citizens and city officials will take the 70-minute bus trip to Atlantic for the viewing of the condominiums. Sonntag has agreed to pay for the whole trip. “I can tell them I build quality condominiums,” Sonntag said, “but it’s much better if they can see that quality for themselves. I sure look forward to seeing everyone in Taylor March.” Sonntag has built more than 175 condominium units in the Atlantic area. In January, Sonntag made a presentation to Creston City Council proposing to build at least 14 condominium units in the Cottonwood Subdivision.

T

he list of problems caused by the frigid temperatures and snow this winter continues to pile up. This time it is affecting the ability of individuals across the country to roll up their sleeve and help save lives. The American Red Cross has had to cancel more than 1,000 blood drives since Jan. 1 because of inclement winter weather conditions. “There are always seasonal challenges that make it difficult to collect,” said American Red Cross Midwest Spokesperson April Oppliger. “We have seen a tremendous toll (on donations) this year.” On average, the American Red Cross uses 15,000 units of blood each day to meet the needs of patients. The winter weather has caused

blood drives in 34 states to cancel, resulting in the loss of about 35,000 units of blood that would have been donated as of Feb. 10. “To give you a comparison, not getting those donations is equivalent to the American Red Cross shutting down its operation for two entire days,” Oppliger said. The American Red Cross plans ahead for the winter weather by increasing donation efforts in areas that typically have mild winter climates. This winter has made that difficult with snow and ice storms rolling through the southern states. “We book our blood drives so far out, we have all of our staff and equipment allocated,” Oppliger said. “We are not always able to reschedule.” At the Southwestern Community College blood drive Monday — which was rescheduled because of inclement weather on Feb. 5 — the American Red Cross staff was shorthanded, restricting the maximum number of donations that

could be collected to only 38 units. SWCC’s Admissions Coordinator Caitlyn Lesan said the drive brought in 29 units of blood, surpassing the Lesan college’s goal of ■ The next community 25 units. drive in “We had a lot of blood the Creston people give walk- area is from in (donations), so noon to 6 that really helped p.m. Feb. 27 us get as many at the Trinunits as we did,” ity Lutheran Lesan said. “Our Church drive will help as many as 90 patients.” At a fully-staffed blood drive, Lesan said their goal has been closer to 50 donations. “High schools and colleges are tremendously important because about 20 percent of our donations are collected at high school and

The last day to “show your love” for your favorite Union County endowment fund is Friday. South Central Iowa Community Foundation (SCICF) is sponsoring a contest to award $1,000 to one of 21 Union County community endowment funds. For a nomination to count, a ballot — published in the Creston News Advertiser Feb. 11 — needs to be postmarked by Feb. 21. “The purpose is to help promote that these funds do exist and help Bear them grow,” said Diane Bear, South Central Iowa Community Foundation president.
