A snowstorm predicted to move into southwest Iowa Tuesday morning could leave 5 to 8 inches of fresh snowfall, meteorologist said. National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for all of the Creston News Advertiser coverage area from Tues-
day morning through Tuesday evening. Additionally, north winds are expected to increase Tuesday evening causing blowing and drifting snow that will create hazardous travel conditions. “You never know what kind of snowfall we will end up with,” said Jo Duckworth, emergency management coordinator in Union County. “The last snowstorm missed us to the south. if roads do deteriorate Tuesday into Tuesday evening people need to ask themselves, how im- Duckworth portant is it that I travel?” Duckworth said if the snowstorm creates poor road conditions and you

The city’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2014-15 was released earlier this month. That budget sets a levy at $13.94 per $1,000 of valuation — up 99 cents from $12.95 this year. Mike Taylor, Creston city administrator, said several factors led to the increased levy for FY2015, including two major capital projects that will be completed over the next five n A public to six years. An architectural firm has already began investigating what structural and cosmetic upgrades are needed at the depot. The estimated cost for that project is $500,000, which will be funded over at least a five-year period.

Iowa kicked off the 2014 legislative session with money in the bank, but legislators are hesitant to use that money to make “one-time” fixes. Rep. Jack Drake, R-Griswold, gave a summary of his focus points for the current legislative session during Creston Chamber of Commerce’s legislative coffee Saturday morning at the restored depot. He said Iowa had a very good year this past year and was able to pay off some bonds and debt, saving the state money on interest. “Where our concern is, when you have an extraordinarily good year, will you have that good year again next year?” Drake said. “If it isn’t as good and you take all that money and spend it on ongoing programs, then you have to make up that short fall.” One of the areas legislators are debating — and was the main topic of concern during Saturday’s meeting — is an increase in the gas tax to help improve road conditions. Iowa Rep. Jack Drake responds to a question during Creston Chamber of Commerce’s first legislative coffee of 2014 at the restored depot. About 25 people attended to listen to Rep. Drake’s update of the start of the legislative session and to ask questions.
Woods and former county supervisor Bob Brown both spoke in favor of the gas tax to help improve area road conditions. Brown said counties are being forced to bond to maintain roads. “I am not taking a position yet (in favor or against the gas tax), but I am going to give a full consideration to a gas tax increase,” Drake said.
In addition to the gas tax, Drake is focused on Iowa’s conservation practices. He wants to help reduce the amount of nutrient drainage and continue investing in a cover crop program. Farmers using cover crops for the first time in 2013 were able to use funding from the state to plant 160 acres of cover crops. The program was maxed out by partici-

Taylor said fiscal year 2014-15 is the final year in a three-year contract with union employees whereby employees will again receive a 2 percent wage increase. Taylor said almost all nonunion employees will receive the same 2 percent increase. Taylor added insurance costs for the city will not increase for fiscal year 2014-15. However, employee contributions to the insurance plan
