UCDA survey: Locals want $1.6 billion better economy, culture Powerball jackpot goes to 3 winners LOS ANGELES (AP) — An eye-popping and unprecedented Powerball jackpot whose rise to $1.6 billion became a national fascination will be split three ways. The winners’ identities remain a mystery, but they bought their tickets in Florida, Tennessee and a Los Angeles suburb where even lottery losers were celebrating Thursday that such heady riches were won in their modest city. The winners of the world-record jackpot overcame odds of 1 in 292.2 million to land on the numbers drawn Wednesday night, 4-8-1927-34 and Powerball 10. They can take the winnings in annual payments spread over decades or a smaller amount in a lump sum. The California ticket

If you could choose one thing to change about Union County, what would it be? A recent public input survey organized by associates of Union County Development Association (UCDA) shows several things Union County residents wanted to see changed, such as financial difficulties and entertainment activities. “We wanted to validate some of our activities that we’re currently doing, make sure that as we’re putting this new plan together, that what w e ’ r e doing is the right Pantini thing,” said Wayne Pantini, director of UCDA. “The survey validated that. We have a pretty good idea of what areas of weaknesses we have.” The online survey was taken by more than 160 people who are 18 years old and older living in the Union County area. According to results compiled, the top
low wages and salaries, and the top two reasons respondents give for considering leaving Union County are high property taxes and not enough cultural, recreational or entertainment opportunities.
Low wages
In the work challenges category, 80 percent of respondents say low wages is the No. 1 difficulty. “I don’t think it’s a secret that our wages are lower here, but our cost of living is lower, too, so we’ve got to weigh all that out with what makes sense,” Pantini said. “The labor market is very tight right now.” The following responses, which participants were allowed to choose a set number of in each category, are not enough jobs at about 47 percent, lack of employee benefits at about 36 percent, no jobs in certain fields and lack of affordable childcare at just over 30 percent, lack of educational training at 20 percent, lack of support to find work at about 12 percent and difficulty getting to work site at about three percent. “One of the things that we continue to do every two years is our laborshed analysis, which tells us what
occupations, what type of benefits they have, and it’s broken down by industry,” Pantini said. “We promote that information to our local industries and we’ll continue to do so.” In order to help fix the low wages and salaries at business and industries in the area, UCDA associates can set a goal to try increasing the median wage. “We can take that information and create some measureable goals for our activities,” Pantini said. “We hope we can increase that median wage for this area.”
Property taxes
The top reason people have considered leaving Union County is having too high property taxes. Despite a recent drop in the Union County tax levy for the 2015-16 fiscal year, the rate is still the fifth highest in the state of Iowa. “Always keeping that tone in the minds of our city leaders and our county leaders and the decisions that they make, they (officials) have to recognize that we’re already burdened with a higher tax rate,” Pantini said. “What can we do to keep that coming down? It’ll be interesting this next year because our assessments are

going up, and how that all balances out as well.” Union County falls behind Clarke, Decatur, Wayne and Lucas counties for highest property tax levy. Clarke has the highest tax levy in the state. It was the third drop for Union County since holding the highest county tax levy in the state for the 2012-13 fiscal year. “I think it tells us it’s important we expand our tax base,” Pantini said. “We can’t expect our existing tax base to continue to take on the increase in cost of a community growing, so we need to make investments into areas that will expand

NEW YORK (AP) — The brutal frontier saga “The Revenant” landed a leading 12 nominations for the 88th annual Academy Awards, while the acting categories were again filled entirely by white performers. The strong showing Thursday for “The Revenant,” including a best actor nod for Leonardo DiCaprio and best supporting actor for Tom Hardy, follows its win at the Golden Globes. It sets up director Alejandro Inarritu for a possible back-to-back win following his sweep for best picture, director and screenplay for “Birdman” last year. “We gave it our all on

was sold at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, California, lottery spokesman Alex Traverso told The Associated Press. The winning ticket in Tennessee was sold in Munford, north of Memphis, according to a news release from lottery officials in that state. The winning Florida ticket was sold at a Publix grocery store in Melbourne Beach. The California store and its surrounding strip mall immediately became a popular gathering spot in the usually quiet suburb of 75,000 people. Hundreds of people, from news crews to gawkers, crowded the store and spilled into its parking lot. Powerball tickets are sold in 44 states, as well as the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
this film and this appreciation from the Academy means a lot to me and my colleagues who made it possible,” said Inarritu in a statement. “Champagne and mezcal will run tonight!” George Miller’s post-apocalyptic sequel “Mad Max: Fury Road” followed with 10 nominations, including best picture and best director for Miller. Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic “The Martian” landed seven nominations, including best picture and best actor for Matt Damon, but, surprisingly, no best director nod for Scott. Eight films were nominated for best picture. The other five were: Tom McCarthy’s investigative journalistic procedural “Spotlight,” Steven Spielberg’s Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies,” Adam McKay’s Michael Lewis adaptation “The Big Short,” the mother-son captive drama “Room” and the ‘50s Irish immigrant tale “Brooklyn.”
