Union County Board of Supervisors approved a five-year roads project plan proposed by Union County Engineer Zach Gunsolley in April. The plan consists of several road projects to begin in fiscal year (FY) 2018, while the rest begin in FY2019. “These roads were selected because of their condition. Some of them, though, are in good condition, and that’s why I picked them, because of their condition, because you have to keep a good road good,” Gunsol-

There are three main projects to begin in FY2018, and 19 projects to be started in FY2019. “Due to the construction program needing prepared two months into my position here at Union County, time was not available to program projects in fiscal years 2020, 2021 and 2022,” Gunsolley said. “Next year, I will have a year under my belt and I’ll know the system better and be able to program projects in those years.” All road projects will still allow access to local properties during construction.

Creston Community School District administrators, certified staff and classified staff will all receive a 1.6 percent wage increase after the CCSD Board of Education unanimously approved the increase during Monday’s regular meeting. The 1.6 percent increase comes at a time when the district has cut nearly $1.5 million out of its budget over the past two years, with more reductions expected in the future. According to CCSD Superintendent Steve McDermott, the 1.6 percent increase was totaled and averaged so each principal in the district would receive the same amount, which was the same approach taken with teachers. “With the change in legislation and Chapter 20, that really changed the whole environment for bargaining,” McDermott said. “We looked at our own budget, and of course we’re in a time we’ve made reductions McDermott and we’ll continue to. We also didn’t feel like it would be right to absolutely freeze everyone’s salaries at

this point, given the changes to Chapter 20 and a lot of the master contract language that has been removed through that process.” McDermott said a “considerable amount” of the previous master contract language is being moved into an employee handbook, which will serve as a set of guidelines for staffing issues. Certified staff, which includes teachers and the teachers’ union, will receive a 1.6 percent total package increase that amounts to $914 total for each teacher. “Our unions have been very cooperative and understanding and great to work with,” said McDermott. “One other point I’d like to make that’s extremely important to me, our union folks take care of younger SCHOOL | 2A

Storms pummel central US, as tornadoes kill at least 2 ELK CITY, Okla. (AP) — Storms whipped through a wide swath of the nation’s midsection, giving rise to tornadoes that flattened a Wisconsin mobile home park and an Oklahoma subdivision and killing at least two people and injuring dozens of others. The storms hit Wisconsin late Tuesday afternoon and into the evening, leveling the Prairie Lake Estate Mobile Park near Chetek, which is about 110 miles northeast of Minneapolis. Mark Tyson said he and his wife Robin were huddled behind a living room chair as the storm hit Tues-

day evening when an entire wall of their mobile home suddenly came flying at them. “I thought we were done,” said Tyson. Shards of glass were flying at them like bullets, Tyson told the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram. “When your house comes apart like that, there’s no place to go. I thought this is it.” A 46-year-old man was killed at the trailer park and at least 25 other people were injured, according to the Barron County Sheriff’s STORMS | 10A
