CITY COUNCIL
Council approves list of streets to receive improvements
Thunderstorms that lashed Iowa may have spawned tornadoes DES MOINES (AP) — Thunderstorms that raced across Iowa have left power outages, damaged buildings and injuries in their wake. Authorities in Butler County say a farmer was hurt when a building fell on him during the storms Wednesday, and a trucker was killed when his semitrailer overturned. It’s unclear, however, whether the truck accident was directly caused by the weather. Tripoli Police Chief Daniel Banks says one storm

A revised street repair plan was agreed upon by council members during Tuesday’s city council meeting. The motion to begin the street improvement projects was passed unanimously by the five council members present. The revised plan isn’t much different than one proposed May 2, when five options were presented to the council. The most noticeable change in the two ideas was the decision to hold off on improvements to North Elm Street. “Its more or less a merge
of a couple different options we had the last go around,” said Austin Smith, an engineer with Garden and Associates. “(We) pulled Elm Street out entirely. It’s kind of our opinion, if we weren’t going to do a whole reconstruction, the city might be allocating their money in the wrong spot.” The decision to wait on Elm Street opened up funds for an overlay on East Montgomery Street between Walnut and Cherry streets. Russell Street received an added overlay between South Sumner Avenue and Jefferson Street. The last addition to the CITY | 2A

struck as the elementary school was dismissing. He says a tree fell on a van full of children, but nobody was hurt. The National Weather Service office in Davenport says it’s deploying survey teams to verify reports of short-lived tornadoes in the area. Another tornado was reported in Sioux County. MidAmerican Energy said Thursday morning that nearly 4,600 of its Iowa customers remained without power.
Former FBI Director Mueller to lead Trump-Russia probe WASHINGTON (AP) — Robert Mueller has been given sweeping power to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign, an acknowledgment of growing public demands to place the politically charged inquiry into the hands of an outside investigator with bipartisan respect. The former FBI director has a broad mandate that could encompass any questionable actions of President Donald Trump’s associates and possibly even the circumstances of last week’s abrupt firing of James Comey. “I accept this responsibili-
ty and will discharge it to the best of my ability,” Mueller said in a statement. In a statement released by the White House, Trump said: “As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know — there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity. I look forward to this matter concluding quickly.” As special counsel, Mueller will direct an FBI counterintelligence investigation examining whether Russia coordinated with Trump campaign associates to influence the election in his behalf.
