PRINCETON — Candidates from all over Bureau County have thrown their hats into the ring for the March 15 primary election. On the ballot will be candidates for state’s attorney, circuit clerk, coroner, county board and precinct committeemen. The filing period for the election began on Monday, Nov. 23, and ended at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30. The following is a list of candidates who had filed
petitions as of deadline for BCR’s Tuesday edition. The BCR will put out an update of any other candidates who may have filed after press time. So far, the March election ballot will contain only one contested race for the Bureau County Board District 12 seat. State’s attorney: Geno Caffarini, a Democrat from Spring Valley. Circuit clerk: Dawn Reglin, a Democrat from Manlius. Coroner: Janice Wamhoff, a Democrat from Princeton.
Bureau County Board seats District 2: Incumbent Dale Anderson, a Republican from Tiskilwa. District 4: Newcomer Keith Cain, a Republican from Princeton. District 10: Incumbent Ralph Anderson, a Republican from Wyanet. District 11: Incumbent John Jacobs, a Republican from LaMoille. Jacobs was appointed to the position in November. So far, 2015 has been a good year for deer hunters in Illinois. According to an Illinois Department of Natural Resources report released on Nov. 24, hunters took a preliminary total of 57,968 deer during the opening weekend of the state’s firearm deer season on Nov. 20-22. During the same period in 2014, hunters took 51,830 deer or 6,138 less than this year. Hunters in Bureau County successfully downed 714 deer, 38 more than the 2014 opening weekend total of 676. Putnam County hunters bagged 12 more deer this year than last with an opening weekend total of 252. In LaSalle County, 547 deer were dropped, seven

Opening the door to improvement

PRINCETON — The Princeton Elementary School (PES) Board cares about its students and the environment where they learn. During their monthly meeting Monday, Nov. 23, board members took time to consider how they can improve their buildings and capitalize on quality administrative techniques.
Many members of the board recently attended the Illinois Association of School Boards Joint Annual Conference in Chicago, and Superintendent Tim Smith spoke for everyone present when he said they really enjoyed it. Board member Terry O’Neil attended a mock suspension hearing at the conference, speaking of elaborate and obnoxious role playing from an attorney, hearing officer, parents and board members. He said some real hearings can become that way, and he walked away feeling good
about how PES handles these hearings. “I feel we do a good job of balancing the need to maintain school policy and enforce it, but at the same time respecting the dignity of the student and the family,” O’Neil said, stating many things can go wrong, and it’s virtuous of the PES Board members to keep hearings on the straight and level.
