From the public ... from the board Bureau Valley School Board listens ... and speaks By Terri Simon tsimon@bcrnews.com

Editor’s note: This is the second story in a two-part series on a special meeting held by the Bureau Valley School Board. MANLIUS — In a two-hour special meeting Monday, Nov. 16, the Bureau Valley School Board heard from the public ... and then those in attendance heard from each board member. The topic of discussion? A survey recently sent out by the board of education to registered voters in the district and how the board should proceed with issues revolving the district’s facilities. The survey was recently sent to Bureau Valley registered voters to get their thoughts on how the district should proceed with consolidating the junior high schools and/

or building a new school in the southern portion of the district. Prior to the survey, the board had voted to build a junior high school next to the high school and consolidate all junior high school students in the district. It had also approved a new kindergarten through fifth-grade building to be built somewhere in the southern part of the district; its location had not been determined. Those two concepts were rejected by the survey respondents. BV Board President Rick Cernovich began the meeting, offering his comments on the past year (See Thursday’s BCR). The meeting was then opened up to the public. Several spoke, including a few teachers from the district. The public was asked to limit their comments to the survey and the future of the district. Following are a few comments from those who addressed the board.

• Pat Wiggim, a Bureau Valley educator, said she had changed her viewpoint about consolidating BV students in the younger grades and now believes it could have a positive educational impact. “Something needs to be done. We can’t continue to travel the path we’re on,” Wiggim said. “When we walk into this building, we have to remember we are Bureau Valley. We love our hometowns ... but we have to remember when we come together, we are Bureau Valley.” Wiggim is suggesting the board should get in to all the communities that comprise the district to educate residents, since many are fearful of tax hikes. She also urged board transparency. • Dr. Tim Pratt spoke about sacrifice and the need to create unity and equality in the district. He said there should

LaMoille goes after bonds By Zachary J. Pratt news@bcrnews.com

LAMOILLE — The LaMoille Community Unit School Board discussed the Qualified Zone Academy Bond Thursday, Nov. 19, both in a public hearing before the regular meeting and within the meeting itself. “We have been discussing this information in the town hall meetings we’ve had, sharing how we’ll work our strategic plan,” Superintendent Ricardo Espinoza said. He explained briefly the plan again for anyone who had not yet heard it. “We’re going to use the bond money, zero percent money, to both fix our facilities and better our curriculum,” Espinoza said. “What’s really neat is that we have business partners helping us write the bond.” The hearing was for public comments, questions and concerns. It ran for 15 minutes, as required, even through occasional silence. Discussion of these bonds continued in the general meeting as well. “They amaze me,” Espinoza said. “You’d think the state wouldn’t do something good for the school districts, but they’re doing something great.” Espinoza explained that not every school can access these bonds. “Chicago public schools will not have their hands in this money,” Espinoza said. “It’s basically for all districts but Chicago schools.” LaMoille is going to go after these bonds to the best of its ability. “We are going to be competitive enough to go for those zero percent bonds,” Espinoza said, add-
