The race has come to a close, and Republican candidate Courtney Yates-Mabry is the new Bureau County Treasurer. Yates-Mabry won over Democrat candidate Rick Wilkin, 7,336 to 5,203. “I’m very humbled by the outcome and by the support I’ve received over the course of this campaign, and I’m very excited,” said Yates-Mabry Wednesday morning after the election. Yates-Mabry is looking forward to updating the office and making a smooth transition into her new position as Bureau County Treasurer. Yates-Mabry recognized Bureau County’s last treasurer, Nina Urbanowski, expressing great appreciation for what Urbanowski has done for the county. Yates-Mabry appreciates the time Urbanowski has put into serving the county and is excited to make the transition. Yates-Mabry’s first order of business will be to hire two new staff members to fill her old position and the position of another retiring employee. So how did she think the campaign went? gratitude toward Wilkin. “I appreciate that Mr. Wilkin ran a clean campaign,” said Yates-Mabry. She said it helped the campaign, since the candidates were able to focus on the issues at hand and keep the campaign a pleasant experience. Bureau County Sheriff: Jim Reed

“There’s a new sheriff in town.” The words were yelled throughout the large crowd greeting Jim Reed as he walked through the doors of Valley Bar and Grill in Spring Valley Tuesday night. There were votes from three precincts left to be

counted, but with Reed’s strong lead ahead of opponent Allan Beaber, there was no doubt in the crowd that he was their new sheriff. Election night ended with Reed at 7,271 votes and Beaber at 5,361 votes. Reed spent the next 10 minutes hugging members of the crowd, giving handshakes and thanking those for their support as the final precincts were reported. In a small speech he prepared for the press, Reed thanked the Bureau County voters, his com-

mittee, friends, neighbors, the Democratic Party, the IVDW, local unions, family, especially parents and in-laws. “I would also like to thank my campaign managers, Mike Miroux and my wife, Maria, for all their countless hours of work, and everyone who attended the parades and walked door-to-door with me in every community in Bureau County, most of them twice,” he said. “It’s been a privilege serving the people of Bureau County for the past 24 years. I look for-

ward to my upcoming roles and meetings with the county board members within the next couple weeks to make a smooth transition,” he said. Reed will replace Sheriff John Thompson, who did not seek re-election. Wednesday morning, Reed recognized Thompson for his 12 years of service as Bureau County Sheriff, as well as Nina Urbanowski for her 40 years of service as Bureau County Treasurer.

Mautino: ‘It was razor thin’ Mautino retains seat, but absentee votes still not counted By Terri Simon tsimon@bcrnews.com

It was a long night for Illinois State Rep. Frank Mautino (D-Spring Valley). With early vote tallies arriving in favor of Republican newcomer Jerry Long of Streator, the ending result favored Mautino, who beat Long by only 340 votes — 17,346 to 17,006. That total, however, is not an official win, since

absentee ballots have yet to be counted. “It was razor thin. I knew it would be a razor thin race,” Mautino said Wednesday morning. “We were watching the results come in, and they were back and forth. Then the late return came out ... So it looks really good, but we’ll have to wait for the provisional ballots and grace period voting. “I’m very optimistic, and I thank the people for

their support. We’ll keep our eye on the State Board of Elections. I’m optimistic,” he said. Mautino Mautino said he has to thank the voters in Bureau and Putnam counties for off-setting the LaSalle County results. Regarding the entire 76th District, which includes Bureau, Putnam, LaSalle and Livingston counties, Long topped Mautino 13,726 to 12,951 in LaSalle County. In Livingston, Long again tipped

the scales in his favor with 343 votes to Mautino’s 187. Bureau County gave Mautino 2,808, compared to 1,767 for Long, while Mautino earned 1,400 votes in Putnam County with Long getting 1,170. Mautino said the close vote is a result of “a bringing back of the parties.” He said he’s proud of the campaign he ran and spoke briefly of what he deemed as “negative mail” sent out by his opponent and his supporters. He also complimented candidates for county level positions,
