BCUW: A good fit for new director Kimberly Scott committed to revitalizing the agency By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com
PRINCETON — Bureau County United Way’s (BCUW) new executive director is motivated to make this year’s campaign goal of $102,000. Princeton native Kimberly Scott accepted the position about a month ago and since then has been working fast to learn the ropes and brainstorm ways on how to get everyone involved in supporting the work BCUW does for its 12 agencies. Scott was born and raised in Princeton, however like many gradating students, left the area for college and a career. About two years ago, she decided to return to the area. This past spring, the company she was working for reduced its sales force, which left her searching for a new direction. When the executive director position at BCUW became available, Scott knew it would be a good fit. The world of nonprofit is a new one for her, however, she’s determined to make a career of it. “It’s one of those jobs where the day flies, and you
get to be out in the community, which I love,” she said. Scott joins the BCUW at a time when the future of the organization is unknown. At this year’s campaign kickoff meeting, BCUW Board President Sue Spratt said without a successful campaign this year, it was uncertain where BCUW would stand next year. Despite the concerns, Scott is optimistic about the future and determined to change the direction of the organization. “We can’t let anything happen to the BCUW. This is a great program that helps these 12 wonderful agencies and the community members of Bureau County,” she said. Scott said more than ever, it’s important to show support for organizations like the BCUW. “Right now, with the economy and the state having tight budgets and cutting funding, it’s super important we’re helping these agencies at a local level,” she

Optimist Friend of Youth winners are brother and sister By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com
PRINCETON — Last year, the Princeton Optimist Club began recognizing local volunteers who have served as exceptional role models to the area’s youth. They called the honor the Friend of Youth Award and planned to choose a new recipient each year who has devoted time and energy to guiding young children and teens. The honoree would be recognized during the annual Pumpkin Races. The club’s first recipient was Rob Jensen, an officer at Princeton Police Department.
Princeton Optimist Club President Kenny Lampley said Jensen was chosen because of his dedication to various sports teams ranging from youth to high school; also for his work with the D.A.R.E. program throughout the years and willingness to teach youngsters about the importance of safety during Princeton Junior Women’s Club’s annual Safety Town event. Lampley said Jensen is really a positive role model to all members of the community. “You go around talking to the kids, and every kid is like ‘Oh yeah, we know Officer Jensen,’” he said.
